I really enjoyed this unit because I learned a lot of good material that will set me up for success. Now I know the basic anatomy of the body. I understand the 3 planes of movement - Median, Frontal and transverse. Knowing these has allowed me to see the different ways the body can be split into sections. I can identify all the bones in the appendicular skeleton - upper and lower extremity. This has allowed me to understand the full amount of bones in the body. I am able to fully understand the regions of the body - cranial cavity, cerebral cavity, thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity, and pelvic cavity. Along with the different abdominal regions - epigastric, right hypochondriac region, umbilical region, right lumbar region, hypogastric region, right inguinal region. Knowing these allows me to know the difference between the dorsal and ventral cavities. I am able to know the different anatomical joints and there place in the body - pivot joint, ball and socket joint, hinge joint, saddle joint, plane joint, condyloid joint. I also know where each of these joint are located and what they mean and do in the body. This is very helpful for me. Overall, I think this unit was very useful, especially for a beginning unit.

Reflection:

Throughout the unit I was able to learn a variety of concepts and skills that are crucial for this. I was able to identify the members of the sports medicine team, which would include athletic trainers, physical therapists and physicians. I am able to differentiate the roles of different sports medicine professions, recognizing haw each contributes uniquely to athletic care. For instances, while athletic trainers focus on injury prevention and immediate care, physical therapist work on rehabilitation and recovery. Also, understanding the universal precautions has allowed me to essentially prevent the transmission of infections in environments where blood or bodily fluids may be present. This is crucial for maintaining safety for both athletes and professional. I have also developed and added to my ability to perform first aid - splinting, bracing, blood control and taping. These skills help enhance my confidence in providing immediate care to injured athletes. I am also able to make better inferences based on specific situation, which involves assessing the context of an injury and applying my knowledge to determine the best course of action. Moreover, I have recalled the steps for activating Emergency Medical Services (EMS) which is essential for timely medical intervention. I can recall various environmental injuries, such as heat exhaustion and hypothermia. And can recognize the signs and symptoms associated with these conditions which is crucial for preventing and managing injuries related to environmental factors. Furthermore, identifying various dermal and bone injuries has been key, as I am able to understand the types of injuries, their mechanisms and appropriate management strategies. Lastly, I have a better understanding of specific terms related to emergency procedures which has enhanced my overall comprehension of sports medicine. Overall, this unit was very hand on which taught me a lot in this field and I feel much more confident in my skills.

Reflection:

Throughout this unit, I have been able to gain a deeper understanding for both skeleton and soft tissue anatomy, particularly focusing on the knee and ankle joints. One of the highlights of this unit was learning about the intricate structures that make up these joints, including ligaments, tendons and cartilage. I found learning about the functions of both the knee and ankle to be engaging and helped me have a deeper understanding for joint stability and mobility. For the knee, I learned it's a hinge joint and is primarily composed of bones such as the femur, tibia and patella, along with ligaments like the ACL and PCL providing stability. Similarity, the ankle joint consists of the tibia, fibula, and talus with ligaments that support its range of motion. In critiquing movements associated with the knee joint, I have learned to analyze various activities such as squatting, jumping and running. Each of these movements require a different engagement of the knees anatomical structure. Understanding the bio mechanics involved has allowed me to realize the importance of proper form in movements, as improper form can lead to injuries, further emphasizing the importance. Similarity, when critiquing movements associated with the ankle joint, I have seen movements such as walking, running, and lateral movements. These have all allowed me to see the ankles ability to dorsiflex and plantarflex during these activities. For example, during running the ankle must absorb impact and provide propulsion. Analyzing these movement has highlighted the significance of ankle stability and strength in preventing injuries particularly in sports. Overall, this unit was very interesting and allowed me to see how much goes into a joint like the knee and ankle.
