In the 1950s, Levittown emerged as one of the first mass-produced suburbs in the United States. Opened in 1947 and developed by William Levitt, Levittown grew to be composed of over 17,000 houses and 82,000 habitants. The style and organization of the community reflected the culture and likes of the American people. Now over 70 years later, Santa Clarita has similarly grown to become a modern-day suburbia. With the exemption of racism and the specific style of that decade. Santa Clarita very closely resembles the Levittown of modern-day America.

Levittown was built upon 1,500 acres of former potato fields. Ultimately, the fast-developing suburb developed from nowhere. According to the Levittown article, in just three years this suburb continued growing and flourishing until it became the tenth largest city in Pennsylvania. The article goes on to explain how the city was quickly composed of several suburb amenities such as paved streets, sewer lines, shopping centers, churches, etc. Just as Levittown was built overtop farmland, Santa Clarita emerged the same way. SCV was built overtop onion and other crop fields. As the town developed into a suburb, the same amenities were built and continue to be built today.

Neighborhood Organization

Santa Clarita has very similar neighborhood and city structure to Levittown. Houses in Levittown were mass-produced. They were organized in almost identical rows of houses along similar street blocks, according to the Levittown article. Additionally, the interior of the houses often followed identical sets of floor plans. The exterior of the house was usually modeled after a modern look such as the modern ranch house, which was very popular during that time. Although the majority of houses today in SCV follow different exterior styles, such as the Spanish house style, the organization of communities in SCV closely resembles that of Levittown. Stevenson Ranch for example, a community within SCV, is composed of rows upon rows of seemingly identical houses. Usually there will be a set of different floor plans that alternate throughout the houses. One feature popular in SCV houses that most Levittown houses did not have is a garage. According to 15 minutes with Levitt of Levittown, garages were seen as a waste of money and instead carports were preferred. Garages are very important to residents of SCV for storing cars and serving as a storage space. Santa Clarita is also divided into separate neighborhoods, just as Levittown was. Some of these neighborhoods include: Stevenson Ranch, Westridge, The Palisades, etc. Within these neighborhoods are distinct ways of naming their streets, a feature identical to that done in Levittown. An example of this would the street names in Stevenson Ranch named after famous poets. Both Levittown and Santa Clarita are highly organized in the structure of their community, and represent a modern-day suburb.

Amenities Within Each

To both entertain and serve their residents, Levittown and Santa Clarita include a variety of amenities. According to the Levittown article, before this particular suburb was built school sites, baseball diamonds, shopping centers, churches, doctors, and many other services, had already been planned to be built. All these amenities were meant to attract residents into moving into Levittown and give them comfort within the suburb. Similarly, Santa Clarita has hundreds of facilities offered to its residents. Schools, churches, stores, and parks scatter the separate neighborhoods. A large shopping center, the Westfield Mall, is centered within the city to give residents a variety of shopping options. Outdoor forms of entertainment are offered openly to all through community swimming pools, tennis courts, basket ball courts, and baseball fields. Residents never have to leave their community to reach amenities such as the doctor's office, the bank, or the dentist. Both Levittown and Santa Clarita offer their residents a variety of facilities to make them feel comfort within the boundaries of the suburb.

Racism vs Diversity

One factor that does set Santa Clarita apart from Levittown is its wide variety of ethnicities. According to Data USA, SCV is composed of White, Hispanic, Asian, and Black residents. A vast number of languages are spoken and there are a vast number of religious beliefs. Levittown on the other hand was solely composed of white residents. According to the Legacy of Bias Levittown appeared to have an unspoken whites-only rule. In one instance, Eugene Burnett, a black WWII veteran, was denied housing within Levittown. The community was built to house only those of the Caucasian race and the residents refused to follow the law and allow newcomers from other ethnicities in. This is an obvious feature that sets Santa Clarita apart from being a modern-day Levittown.

Conclusion

Overall Santa Clarita holds a close resemblance with Levittown. Both are very organized communities divided further into neighborhoods. Houses are visually attractive and their styles reflect the culture of their respective decade. However, due to the difference in the decades each suburb has developed their own exterior style and structure. Levittown and Santa Clarita both offer several amenities to benefit the comfort of their residents. The most noticeable difference distinguishing Santa Clarita from Levittown, is its ethnically diverse population. The majority of Levittown held a racist mindset and prevented any other ethnicities from residing within the suburb. Despite the few differences, Santa Clarita could be considered a modern-day Levittown to a large extent.
