Naloxone (Narcan) is the antidote for opioid overdose. Narcan works by preventing opioids from binding to brain receptors. Unfortunately, by the time a person realizes they overdosed, they are usually unconscious and it’s too late to self-administer Narcan. This innovation is a smart implantable device that monitors respiration rate and delivers Narcan without any additional intervention (Medgadget Editors, 2019). “The system includes a wearable device that can detect the wearer’s breathing, via electrocardiography, and calculates the person’s respiration rate. An implantable drug-releasing cartridge, placed under the skin and below the wearable, is triggered by the external device using an electromagnet. The magnetic field is made to fluctuate, heating up the implant and breaking it apart, in the process releasing the naloxone” (Medgadget Editors, 2019, para 4).

The opioid epidemic is only getting worse. Over the past thirty years, the United States has experienced three waves of opioid overdose deaths (prescription opioids, heroin, synthetic opioid). In the United States, 136 people die daily from an opioid overdose (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). At my place of employment, we counsel all our patients on opioid overdose, and provide each patient with a free sample of nasal-inhaled Narcan. Every 90 days, we contact our patients, reeducating them on Narcan and opioid overdose, and inquire if they have used Narcan and need a free replacement. Although easier to use than injectable Narcan, inhaled Narcan still requires Narcan to be administered by the patient or caregiver. This closed-loop innovation is automatic and would kick in as soon as the patient needed the antidote.
