Effective as a pre- training tool?

Pros:
Designed to improve joint, bone and muscle strength of young horses- work able to be controlled and regulated. Monitored across a level surface and speeds can easily be controlled, arguably reducing injury.
•	As the young horse lacks musculoskeletal development, the Kurtsystem allows for exercise without the weight of the rider.
•	Has the capacity to measure heart rate, lung capacity and gait = further enhances training
•	Eliminates jockeys’ human error- training can be regulated and remains consistent

Cons:
•	Doesn’t take each individual horse into account as the machine cannot ‘feel’ like a jockey who would be able to recognize when a horse is tired or struggling
•	There is a risk that trainers may actually end up pushing young horses further

Possible con dependent on time

As its a machine on a set track the horses have less variation of side ways movement which for racing is probably a positive however depending on how many laps that machine goes for, the ground will become impacted at a quicker rate than the freedom of slight changes on the gallops meaning loading forces are increased at a quicker rate possibly (couldn't find exact research/appropriate wording so also a question i guess)

Treats every horse as the same and whilst the horses may be grouped to similar abilities the machine can still overtire individual horses or possibly not push certain horses enough for adaptations beneficial for training especially as this is meant to set them up for further training

Couldn't access website on kurtsystems to check this but the injury risk of a horse stumbling/tripping, the damage could be more dependent on the machines emergency protocol as it may not recognise a horse injured like a jockey would

It acts as a very good de-sensitisation tool as putting a young horse in those huge pods and listening to the machine sounds should help make them less spooked when experiencing the stocks and loud atmosphere at a race.

It has been developed to focus on improving the musculoskeletal development of young horses because it only uses muscles that have developed to exercise and this will reduce the likelihood of early injury so they can aim to have a longer career.

It also allows the horse to exercise without rider weight on its back, reducing the pressure on joints and the musculoskeletal system. It also eliminates the chance of human error as the whole training session is controlled by the machine.

It only travels in straight lines, on a soft surface which will reduce pressure on joints.

Cons
Doesn't get horses used to the feel/weight of a human from a young age, which could make the backing process take longer.

If the horse is struggling or becoming fatigued the machine will not recognise this factor, therefore could cause injury by pushing a weaker or less developed young horse too far.
