Journal Entry : From the Patient’s Perspective

Lying in the dental chair as a patient, I feel nervous and a little vulnerable. The bright light above me and the unfamiliar sounds make me tense. When the dental assistant gives instructions like “Open wider” or “Turn your head,” I try to follow, but sometimes I don’t understand right away—especially if my mouth is numb. Simple things, like being told, “You’re doing great” or “Let me know if you feel uncomfortable,” help me relax. If instructions are too fast or too technical, I feel confused and embarrassed to ask again. I appreciate when the assistant uses calm tone and friendly eye contact—it makes me feel safe and respected. I also notice how small gestures, like pointing or giving a thumbs-up, make communication easier when I can’t speak. From this perspective, I realize how important it is to be clear, gentle, and patient when giving instructions during treatment.
