“ Excess of work exhausted Fantine, and the small, dry cough from which she suffered grew worse.” “She no longer spoke, she no longer breathed; she had raised herself to a sitting posture, her thin shoulder emerged from her chemise; her face, which had been radiant but a moment before, was ghastly, and she seemed to have fixed her eyes, rendered large with terror, on something alarming at the other extremity of the room.”

Explanation: Since Fantine needed the money for Cosette, she had to work as hard as she could. All the amount of work, stress, worries and no health were driving her crazy. She became very sick and needed help but she had to work for the money for the Thenardiers. She suffered a lot in this process and she obviously missed Cosette. Fantine’s life was very hard and we know she suffered a lot when she needed a job, couldn’t get money, sacrificed leaving her daughter and last but not least, an illness. When she was sick, they promised her bringing her Cosette and when she found out Cosette was not there, she suffered from a heart attack and died.

“I have eighty francs. I shall have enough left to reach the country, by travelling on foot. I shall earn money there, and as soon as I have a little I will return for my darling. - Fantine” “Fantine tried to find work as a servant, but no one would take her.” “She could not earn enough and her debts grew. The Thénardiers bombarded her with letters, heartrending in tone and ominous in their exactions. ”

Explanation: Fantine was poor and had to maintain her daughter. She had to give her away to the Thenardiers to take care of her to get a job and she promised to send money to the family each month. She was not earning enough money for Cosette and for her and she had to become a prostitute. The family bothered her, asked for more money each time because they didn’t understand her situation. A lot of poverty is shown in this book and this is one example of it.

“Marius almost reproached himself with the fact that he had been so absorbed in his reveries and passion that he had not until now cast a glance upon his neighbors. Paying their rent was mechanical impulse; everybody would have had that impulse; but he, Marius, should have done better. Every day at every moment, he heard them through the wall, walking, going, coming, talking and he did not lend his ear! Pg. 205

Explanation: Marius felt guilt because he felt he could have helped more his neighbors who were the Thenardiers. He even paid their rent and helped them with it but he thought he could have helped them even more. His neighbors were supposedly poor and needed help with their rent and to live. He felt this remorse and tried to spy them to watch how was their daily life and how much help they really needed. This remorse went away when he discovered they never were really that poor or needed much help.

“Jean Valjean was pronounced guilty. The terms of the Code were explicit. There occur formidable hours in our civilization; there are moments when the penal laws decree a shipwreck. What an ominous minute is that in which society draws back and consummates the irreparable abandonment of a sentient being! Jean Valjean was condemned to five years in the galleys.”

Explanation: Jean Valjean worked and did all that he could to maintain his family but they were very poor. One night, he had to steal bread since they had nothing to eat. His intentions were not bad but what he did, we can agree is wrong. Jean Valjean was condemned to five years in prison because of the stealing of bread. This was not fair, so many years in prison because he was desperate and needed to help his family and give them food. Those five years turned into nineteen when he tried to escape three times.

“‘He is not a saint, and he is not a hero,’ said Thenardier. ‘He is an assassin and a robber.’” Pg. 385

Explanation: It’s clear that Thenardier is jealous of Jean Valjean. He describes him this way and he knows Jean Valjean is not an assassin or a robber. Thenardier is jealous of Jean Valjean since he knows Jean Valjean is considered a hero. He judges him knowing the real truth and it is that Valjean is a good, admiring, wealthy man.

“ ‘Monsieur, sit down and warm yourself: we are going to take supper presently, and your bed will be made ready while you sup.’At last the man quite understood; his face, the expression of which till then had been gloomy and hard, now expressed stupefaction, doubt, and joy, and became absolutely wonderful. He began to stutter like a madman.”

Explanation: The bishop was generous and through his generosity he made Jean Valjean happy and we can still see this today. He gave him food and treated him a very different way than he used to be treated. The bishop was the only one who offered him his help. Hopefully we can see this throughout the book and other moments. Since there is a lot of poverty, I believe there will be some acts of generosity to explain this.

“However, he had hardly quitted the audience hall of the Court of Assizes, when the district-attorney, recovering from his first shock, had taken the word to deplore the mad deed of the honorable mayor of M. sur M., to declare that his convictions had not been in the least modified by that curious incident, which would be explained thereafter, and to demand, in the meantime, the condemnation of that Champmathieu, who was evidently the real Jean Valjean.”

Explanation: The government thought they had found Jean Valjean but it was really another man. When Jean Valjean heard this news, he couldn’t handle the guilt and thought he needed to declare he was the one they were looking for. Jean Valjean did declare he was the one they were looking for and because of his honesty the other suspect was set at liberty and he was arrested. This is an example of a great leader and an example of an honesty act.

They met after all the time they missed and thought about each other. We can feel the love they are feeling with just meeting again after all the time they spent apart. I hope this love will last and will be strong.

“There is, in the cemetery of Pere Lachaise, in the neighborhood of the Potter's’ field, far from the elegant quartier of the city of sepulchers, far from all those fantastic tombs which display in presence of eternity the hideous fashions of death, in a deserted corner, beside an old wall, beneath a great yew on which the bindweed climbs, among the dog-grass and the mosses, a stone.” Pg. 399

Explanation: Jean Valjean was buried in a cemetery far from the elegant, simple and out of the ordinary. He is a rich man who normally a rich man would be buried in a fancy, elegant place but Jean Valjean wasn’t this type. He even dead was a humble man. This quality is admiring for a man with so much money.

Marius was extremely sad and did not reacted to this. Cosette and Marius are really in love, specially right now and Jean wants to move away. Marius was so heartbroken because of this because it was so unexpected. Will their love be able to survive this or will they have to break up?
