As we know, the world often looks down on Chinese culture and its people due to news media, and ignorance. This artwork focuses on the positive aspects by showing the beauty and uniqueness of Chinese culture. Through the use of traditional patterns, symbols, and colours, I wanted to send the message that this is a beautiful culture that cannot be wiped out by hate. The reoccurring woman brings empowerment to the piece through her position and stare. Amidst the negative stigma, a shining and bright culture emerges to contradict what we often hear.

The art piece is chaotic and unnatural, humorizing these absurd ideals created on women’s bodies. When viewing the piece, attention is mainly drawn onto the subject’s textured body. There is varied use of textures, all differentiating from one another perpetuating an uncomfortable feeling. The skin looks rough and overwhelming. Quick attention is drawn onto the duplicated breasts with thick heavy brush strokes stimulate heavy weight added onto the subject. Bold and saturated colors overwhelm the painting, bringing attention to almost every detail. The background also floods with weird and unfit objects, also symbolizing the different assumptions made by society on women due to how they appear. The patinging is restless as patterns and textures are layered, allowing the viewer to identify something new each glance.

This is a topic I hope the general public of Cambodians and potential viewers find relevant/connected towards their life, whether they have experienced it first hand or witnessed it, must feel the importance of abolishing society's patriarchal reluctance. Through the combination of mixed media elements, I was able to discover different techniques such as warping, distorting, layering and cutting and pasting in software editing which enabled me to express mental health as the struggle of self identification.

This was achieved through a vintage, and real life horror story vibe in my painting. The Naga is deeply embedded into Khmer culture, and the issue with power that had been around for generations and generations in Cambodia. Metamorphosizing a human body on a Naga head shows power in the subject, which creates a more literal message. I want to show the real life impact that corruption has on the vulnerable through using dripping repetition and graphite to produce this piece. These gender roles and standards are demeaning for young people to grow up learning and can normalize discriminatory and violent behavior. I painted the opposite of these gender roles (eg. a woman must be quiet and submissive) because they can't continue to be perpetuated as they are harmful. A well known saying is that “a man is gold, a woman is white cloth”, they are easily stained whereas gold can be dropped into mud and easily wiped off. The man holds a white cloth to represent how deeply ingrained the Chbab Srey is in Cambodian society but he can use that same white cloth to help the woman wipe off the stain on her golden skirt. The woman looks into the distance at the floating womb; the Chbab Srey reduces a woman’s ability to only being a mother but she is much more. The piece that I have created reflects on the society’s opinions and viewpoints towards gender stereotypes and homophobia in Cambodia’s culture. After interviewing friends who proudly represent the LGBQT+ community, a common topic which I have received was the idea of wearing a mask and not being able to express their sexuality in  the vines of Khmer society. This art piece sheds light towards the society’s opinions and viewpoints represented by the dark bunch of mutated eyes in the bottom looking upwards to the figure. This represents the modern change in which shows a person with the visuals that society disassociates with such as: armpit hair, awkward poses; a figure with bole male and female attributes. As the figure is seen as attacking the bush, the khmer words above says “What do you play with?”; the idea of modernism is making a breakthrough in the old mindsets of cambodians. The younger generation is making ‘a slice of change!’

One that praises Asian women with the model minority myth, based on how well they fit into western standards, as seen by more western looking brides dress, but still as a foreign commodity with how her eyes slightly resemble the popular anime style. The spotlight symbolises the performative nature of changing yourself when others look at you. The roses which she holds show an acceptance of the praise given, but with how she bleeds from the thorns it is still shown that the conformity is hurting her. The woman breaks the silhouette of the light beam, signaling something is off. While the spotlight is on her, some spots are still more concealed and hidden, reflecting on how many will only focus on the parts of other cultures they see as appealing. And in the background, the wallpaper of cultural patterns, representing her cultural roots, are peeling leaving a blank wall, however, the subject stays posing for the spotlight regardless.

In this sense, is a form of communication that allows people from many cultures and eras to communicate with one another through visuals, senses, and tales. It is frequently used to effect societal change. This was demonstrated in my piece by the various symbolisms used, making it an efficient tool for communicating specifically with my target audience. This piece of artwork can be used to highlight the difficulty of viewing reality because it will make an emotional connection with the audience, it may cause their beliefs and attitudes to shift. When people change, society changes as well. To conclude, this artwork exemplifies feminism; it represents society by demonstrating how women are regarded as if they are weak and empty vessels. With the artwork, this idea is challenged by displaying the truth by reminding the audience of all the elements of women, such as their bodily parts, veins, flowers, particles, and so on. This highlights the importance of women in society; they carry life and are far more than empty vessels or objects that society can control.

In this piece, I have created a digital drawing that focuses on the concept of how mentally draining isolation can be to society. The bubble symbolizes how the majority feels trapped in their own mind bubble where many of their thoughts, as a survey done online says, leads to depression. In the artwork, a hole forming on the person's body representing the emptiness individuals feel being trapped and are unable to ask for help. Being alone tests how mentally strong people are as we start to think more about ourselves, family, friends, our life, and our past. In one way, the bright and lively flowers in contrast to the fleshy palette and dull expression of the portrait, representing a symbol of femininity; a typically more “girly” element, and although its normal, natural, and part of him, it is painted as somewhat negative, appearing to be hurting. The concept of masculinity itself is built on misogyny and degrades women so men can feel superior or dominant, and goes back to deeper traditions, beliefs, and ways of growing up. In connection the flowers growing out of that wound, symbolize the issue itself, an issue that has been “deeply rooted” in society, and the general use of growing flowers can then link to the idea that it stems from how they grew up.  I used blue and pink colors in the portrait as a connection to the typical colors that have been associated with genders. In contrast, with the use of thick strokes to symbolize the harshness, strength, and dominance coveted within masculinity,  I painted a white background symbolizing that we start from a blank canvas, with what should have no labels and assigned colors, while also representing the emptiness. Our society is full of victims suffering from violence we don't know, and there are times when people just pass by. I tried to raise awareness of violence in such people, and in the hope that violence would be reduced, I came to create a work that reflects and opposes this violence in society. The female is a victim of violence. Her peaceful expression and posture depict her lifeless body finally escaping the clutches of abuse. Her hair is splayed out to represent blood and life seeping out of her body. Her flawless, delicate skin is seen to be wilting and withering, revealing the internal trauma underneath and the years of abuse she withstanded. The poppies around her are to commemorate the countless innocent victims who lose their lives due to abuse.
