Marquez hails from Colombia being regarded as one as one of the best Colombian that has ever lived according to the current president. He's won both the Neustadt award for literature in 1972 and the noble peace prize for literature in 1982. He also helped slow, and in a way, bring peace to Columbia by brokering peace talks between the governement and the rebels.
