Paragraphs 14 and 15 outline the financial situation of Barbara and explain some of the lengths she must take in order to collect enough money to pay her bills. She mentions how she must work two jobs and chooses to move to a trailer park closer to her work in order to save money. This causes her to admit to losing the energy to focus on anything outside of work as she has no available energy and doesn't she an value in not crucial activities (P. 7).

Paragraphs 1 and 2 describe the grotesque and horrific working conditions Barbara faces at a fast food restaurant. She mentions how both the customers and employees develop serious repercussions from such an environment. This includes a very poor diet, the consumption of unsanitary products, and repeated exposure to carcinogens like cigarettes.

In increased harshness and greater exposure to others lacking empathy, degrades a person's own willingness to be kind.

During the essay, the author mentions several examples a constant lack of sympathy shown to her by others. Some examples are when customers regularly choose to give her little to no tips (Paragraph 11) and angry bosses who constantly harass her and other employees (Paragraphs 4 & 10). This manifests during the conclusion, as Barbara recognizes she failed to act with any affinity for others. She contributes this to a submission to the environment of hate and struggle she has lived with during her two months at Jerry's and living as a low-wage worker.

Barbara witnesses the struggle of many around her and observes as they seek ways to escape reality. The author explains how nobody talks about topics that involve any necessity for money but instead a repeated focus on drinking, smoking, and sex (P. 11 and 16). Barbara also admits to a newly developed dependence for pain killers as she needs them to end of pain before each shift (P. 6)

Barbara provides no explains of role models or inspiration or uplifting figures in the essay. She instead provides examples of all the obstacles keeping one from maintaining a focus on success. This includes crime, liquid stores on every corner, and bad influence in the form of her coworkers (P. 15, 6, 3). Without an obvious pathway or guide success, a way for a better life appears impossible.
