In a bilingual education classroom, every student speaks the same language. The teacher is bilingual in English and their students native language. Usually, the teacher begins teaching mainly in the native language, while gradually adding in more English until eventually the teacher is able to fully teach in English. The goal of bilingual classrooms is to have students lean English while still being able to speak their native language and be able to connect with their culture at school, not just at home. Specific models depend on the district, federal and state laws, and the amount of ELL students in the city.

Bi-literacy is the main goal of this program. The development should be balanced that way the students are proficient in both languages. There are two types of sub-modes: Two-way and One-way. The two-way model means that some students speak English more proficiently while other speak Spanish, and they help teach each other/learn both languages simultaneously. One-way means that every single student only speaks their native language at home, and is learning bth languages simultaneously.

Having different opportunities where Parents of ELL's can volunteer and genuinely feel welcomed in their child's school helps increase parent engagement. Ways to do this are inviting them to speak about their career or culture, invite them to spend time in a classroom and observe, or offer them to volunteer in the office if there is a person there who can help translate if the parent does not speak English.

Hosting culture days and making sure the classroom has pictures, books, etc of the students culture would likely help parents stay more involved and not as scared to show up and be themselves.

Being able to write emails and speak to the parents using their native language helps keep the parents properly informed and not stressed about trying to understand what their children are doing while in school if they can’t understand what assignments a student brings home. Communication is so important in general but especially when keeping parents engaged. According to the article attached, many parents don’t look at weekly newsletters emailed out, so reaching out directly to a parent increases engagement. It’s also important to find out which way the parents like to be contacted as well.
