Maya was surprised because she thought her dad was wealthy and dating a knock out gorgeous woman, but he was actually living in a trailer park with a woman who wasn't that attractive and was shorter than Maya. She was surprised by Delores and Delores was surprised by her. Maya was mentally comparing her father's girlfriend to her mother, and as a result was horribly disappointed. Delores was shocked to greet a teenager because Bailey Sr. told her that his children were eight and nine. Her father called himself a Naval Dietritian when in reality he was a cook at the Naval hospital nearby. Delores called him this too because his title boosted her self esteem. Bailey Sr. regularly went to towns on the Mexican side of the border because he was an excellent chef and wanted to get good ingredients. He took Maya on one of these trips. This drove Delores crazy with jealousy because Bailey Sr. had never taken her on one of his excursions. Maya's mother helps her get ready for the trip and when she arrives down there she meets Dolores Stockland and the two don't hit it off since Dolores doesn't exactly like Maya. Mostly appearance wise. Daddy Bailey decides to drive down to Mexico to pick up groceries which Maya is excited about. Dolores is not happy but Daddy Bailey goes anyway. When they get there her dad meets a prostitute who clings to him and leaves Maya in the car. Maya waits for a long time she describes how the children are either half or fully naked she also wishes to meet Pancho Villa. Her dad get hammered and can't drive so he passes out in the back of the car. Maya knows a little Spanish from school. So she tries to tell a man to help her turn the car around. He leaves the engine running indicating he understood her. Maya drives down a mountain. Which was very hard for her. Once she is off the mountain they pull up to customs. When they get there the guard is leaning out the window talking to another driver. When she is leaving she turns and runs into a family. Everyone is screaming yelling and it's a massive scene. Maya tries to use her little Spanish to explain herself, as the people assume that she has a dead body in the car. When they find out it's just her drunk father everyone tries to wake him. When he wakes up he yells out some questions in Spanish. Once he comes to his senses he tells Maya to get the insurance papers to give to the guard. Maya wants to tell her dad how she drove down the mountain all by herself but decides not to. Maya's Dad is a very good cook and his wife expects the very best food and spices. Maya has a very creepy interaction with a man who Maya's dad discusses Maya marrying him. He puts his hands on Maya when she doesn't want to be touched. They arrive at a bar on the far outskirts of town where Maya's dad meets a prostitute he has been secretly hooking up with. Maya's dad has sex with her and gets as drunk as a skunk. He falls asleep on the back seat of the car. Instead of risking spending the night in Mexico, Maya decides to drive home even though she does not know how to drive. She drives over fifty miles on a winding, hilly mountain road, scared for her life. She ends up at the same place with the same creepy Mexican dude who touched her inappropriately. Once she gets his approval to pass, she loses control of the car and crashes into the car next to her. She tries to explain what is happening to her, but is unable to explain due to her weak use of Spanish. After fifteen minutes, the people realize what is going on, and they manage to almost beat her Dad back to consciousness. He begins to drive the two home. She meets his girlfriend, Dolores, and the two immediately do not hit it off. They remain slightly resentful of each other, so Maya is excited to escape her constant scrutiny when her father takes her to Mexico for a trip. She is at first curious about Mexico, then confused when her father drives through where he said they were going. They get to a guard gate, where go drinks with the guard, tries to auction her off, and then continues on to some random house party/bar. He sleeps with some little Mexican girl, gets black out drunk, and Maya has to find him with only sub-par Spanish assisting her. She finally finds him, he passes out in the back of the car, and she has to drive fifty miles down a mountain when she's never driven before. She makes it to the guard gate, accidentally crashes, and revs up to do a lot of explaining. Fortunately, the guard is able to wake up her dad, and after some smooth talking and possible attempted daughter selling Bailey gets them off scotch free. When they go to Mexico, her dad drinks half a bottle of liquor with a border guard and drunkenly tries to marry her off. They get to a different town, and he goes to a bar while she goes to some sort of dance party. He gets wasted and sleeps with some girl and Maya has to try to drive him home. She has never driven before, so she has someone turn it around for her and she gets to the border before crashing into another car. Her dad is awakened by the crash and talks them out of trouble.
