She was successful with a bit of flaws as she managed to overthrow a man and even maintained a calm composure when the man had actually hurt her but she managed to keep it to herself. Verity was successful as a friend as she has reached the point where both Maddie and verity are both able to show their most vulnerable sides and still can help console each other. 2.Yes, she was successful in potraying her roles. As a collaborator, she was able to extract information for the English from the captive man and how she uses her skills that she was taught such as fear to threaten him into telling her at the end. As a friend, Verity showed her weaker side to her friends as she breaks down and shaking all over. She allowed her friends who are the closest to her in this situation to know she how she truly felt and that showed her she potrayed as a friend.

3) She felt overwhelmed with too many emotions that had been bottled up inside of her for a very long time. Her job as a spy, collaborator and even as friend makes her believe and feel that it is wrong to feel weak in front of people. In the text, Wein portrays Verity as a someone with a strong front, strong-minded, smart and cunning woman. There are meanings behind every lie she tell, which she lies to protect, where she fights the Gestapo , and also bears every form of torture she gets for not telling certain infomation. She shows the physical pain she feels, but she does not shoe the emotional pain. The price to pay for protecting is torture, brutal torture. She also feels that she has to be strong for a bestfriend maddie in order to not make her worry about her, and also be someone maddie can depend on. However, after the interrogation, Verity finally confides with someone she trusts, someone who understands the pain of a spy and collaborator, whom that is maddie.

Verity was also successful in her role as a friend as she showed on page 218 that she was comfortable with confiding and sharing her struggles with Maddie. This suggests that she had built a lot of trust with Maddie, and that she was a great friend to Maddie.

verity is very successful at playing the role of a spy on page 217, reducing her opponent to tears, and persuading him to tell her his assignment by manipulating his emotions. these are all skills a good spy should have, and verity very clearly demonstrates them.

In page 218, verity was a friend to Maddie because she is comfortable when she's with Maddie  and they know each other really well since Maddie noticed that Verity does make small, fatal mistakes. She is also comfortable in sharing her thoughts with Maddie and she makes jokes with her. It shows how intimate their friendship is. The action of Verity crying infront of Maddie and Maddie's will to comfort her instead of neglecting her shows how their relationship can be as close as sisters although they are friends.Hence, showing Verity's role as a friend.

2. Yes, she is successful at playing those roles here. As a collaborator, she does her job by retrieving information from the man's assignment and then passing on the information to the English successfully. Although she got tortured and was in pain, she felt that it was worth it and that she did a good job. She was proud of herself for going through all the pain and got the information in the end. When she called for help, it wasn't the desperate kind of call instead, it was the kind where she wasn't in fear but with disdain and dismissal. Verity is successful in being a friend as she is truthful to Maddie and vise-versa. They both understand one another very well and is willing to be there for one another through thick and thins.

3. In page 217, it states ' I didn't let on how much he'd hurt me and they didn't think to check. It was that night's nerves of steel that landed me in France six weeks ago.' This shows that the pain she got physically could not compare to the pain she got mentally. She takes every mistake , whether it's a minor or major mistake, into account. It shows how she may be regretful as she realises how tough her job is compared to Maddie's.
