"This short essay argues that the media attention paid to TikTok during this time can be read as a celebration of girlhood in the face of the pandemic, and can be seen to contribute to the transformation of girls’ ‘bedroom culture’ (McRobbie and Garber, 2006) from a space previously conceptualised as private and safe from judgement, to one of public visibility, surveillance and evaluation (Kennedy, 2020)."

What attracted me most in the article was that TikTok platform effectively changed the original girl’s bedroom culture during the epidemic. As we learned from Week 5, bedroom culture can be explained a theory developed by sociologist Angela McRobbie that girls' social interaction can be done in the bedroom to avoid unnecessary criminal behaviour or harassment. But in practice, girls are trapped in the bedroom and not allowed out, but boys can. In this article, bedroom culture is a creative platform for girls. The backgrounds in most of TikTok's videos of girls are bedrooms, where they practice dancing, and create the girls' culture and their charm.
