Emperor penguins live in harsh, cold climates that can ultimately impact their young's well being. In need of protecting their young ones and themselves, the males instinctively huddle together to stay warm. In the position of protecting the young, it is not an option for the parent (that is currently raising) to feed. if their other half doesn't make it back in time for their turn to raise their chick, they will go look for food in exchange for abandoning their chick to be a prey for predators

Living in a freezing environment means that warmth is pretty much unavailable to open access. In hopes of staying warm, the male emperor penguins huddle together with the eggs and chicks in the center to block the cold wind. For the time being, parents with chicks running around will alternate between feeding and nursing. Each penguin will have a limited amount of time to feed themselves. If they don't get back to their family in the period of time, the one taking care of the chick will abandon their duties as a parent and look for food.

As a student who is studying about behaviors in animals, i'd say social behaviors are a big advantage in terms of survival. Taking what learned from innate behaviors, yes, it can be unfortunate for others but when talking about a single animal, they will have a great chance of surviving without having to learn it. Other behaviors like defensive behaviors or mate selections are all advantages for animals to use for survival.
