The Dangerous Samaritans: How We Unintentionally Injure the Poor

I agreed with most of what was said in this article. Raising minimum wage for the lowest unskilled workers is a bad idea for both corporations and the individuals themselves. Typically there is a reason why they are at that level of work, and often times it is due to the fact they simply will not make the necessary sacrifices needed to progress their future and prosper. Giving them that extra income will only encourage them to stay in the current positions without working harder to better themselves. It also hurts consumers as well. If companies are forced to pay higher wages to the lowest level, then they will have to raise prices to cover those expenses. Not all who are poor are doing nothing though, many are trying to get out of that class, working hard and they should have the opportunity to be helped if need be. But since so many abuse the system all the money set aside to combat poverty seems like it is doing nothing at all, which really puts into perspective the amount of people who simply will not work hard to get ahead in their lives.
This is absolutely relevant in today's society. We still have the fight for higher minimum wage, the battle over welfare, and the issue of helping those who will not help themselves. It's hard to see all this money going to those who will not do anything more for themselves and not think what a waste of time and resources. Especially in the eyes of those who have sacrificed so much, or are currently in the process, to be successful, only to watch their hard earned money and taxes paid go to that.

At first, I thought I would be reading about a religious moral people seeing a decline in its believers and how terrifying that may be. While there was a definitive religious flair to it, the article mostly touched on something I hear all the time, often by my very conservative Mother. That is the "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for everything" quote by Alexander Hamilton. Meaning be confident in your beliefs. I agree with this is certain terms. Morality, in terms of human decency seems to be defined by very basic truths. Integrity, Kindness and Honesty. I believe in those Moral subjects with all my heart and will stand firm for them all day long. However, these days Morals such as Honesty and Integrity can have so many gray areas to consider that truth becomes subject to the viewer.

So are we really in a Moral Stone Age? I don't think we are. I think we are redefining Morality as we redefine religion. For example, I find that when we dig through the "greatest books" as Sommers mentions, like the bible, we find many confusing stories about Morality. The same is true for our History, while we define our laws and pride in the basis of American History, we also find damning evidence of anything but moral behaviors.

Don't get me wrong, I love our country. I find warranted beauty in Religion as well. What I don't believe is that youth in general are losing a sense of morality based on biblical knowledge and standards. I find incredible amounts of Moral youth everywhere I look. Without a fear of Heavenly Judgement, I can see how it might look like a loss. But may I suggest teaching Morals by living them.

I believe in being a good person and having integrity and self-respect. We learn this from our fundamental institution in life. for certain people, religion is not how we learn to be a moral person. I have free will and a moral compass from life experiences and example I've seen. For some, yes, religion is powerful when it comes to morals but isn't being a morally conscious person what it means to be a peaceful human? As a morally conscientious person, I would never preach the Bible doesn't works on building morals because it does for many, for lots! But what kind of moral person would I be to tell another person they are immoral because they follow the word of good? Doesn't make sense. It was an interesting read, coming from the perspective of Christina Sommers. I don't quite agree with all of her beliefs, and I'm confident in that.

Are We Living in a Moral Stone Age?

This article was very blunt in getting it’s point across. It is a point that I believe is very true. American youth are morally confused. They have trouble with knowing what is right and wrong. The mindset is that whatever works for someone is fine. When in it’s simplest form I believe is terrifying. The solution given by the author to this moral confusion is to teach the youth how to understand the great books and the great ideas. She suggests bringing back literature that was taught for hundreds of years. Such as the Bible, Shakespeare’s works, and works by Aristotle. The idea is to teach the students of today time. Honored morals that work for all nations. Like respect for others, kindness, self sacrifice, and honesty. I think this is a good idea to a point. My biggest issue with this idea is who decided what morals are left in and what are left out. There are many morals that are believed to be the best according to many different people. Should we choose those that only Americans believe are best? Or those that are accepted by most of the western world? There are so many ideas and questions that go with this idea. I’m not sure if the school would be the best to try and shove it down students thorats. Yes, I believe today’s youth struggle with right and wrong, but I think the role of the school is to teach students academics, and by example morals. The idea behind morals should be taught by practice to students. Let the teacher be the example to their class.

This article brought up great points in minimum wage laws, housing laws and charities. The article explained that despite us believing that we are doing the best we can to help the poor, we are always hurting them as well. The article explained that charities that are built to help the poor aren't always giving the money which is raised up because who exactly would they give it to? The article brought up very good points and I couldn't have agreed more.
https://www.powtoon.com/c/gfhcN9TWCEh/1/m

I found this article really fascinating as it delved into some areas that some might deem controversial, such as suggesting that a living wage isn't the best idea, welfare hurts the poor and how single mothers who instead of marrying someone just seek welfare. Many people I know believe that people deserve a living wage but fail to realize that this would only raise the prices of everything which would only create more people in poverty. I thought this article brought up many points that people tend to gloss over with rose colored glasses and just assume people aren't going to choose whatever is easiest. That many people who are in the welfare system don't want to leave and just abuse it. I thought his arguments were very insightful and couldn't have been more right in many regards.

She uses an example of Jay Leno on the streets and young people not being able to identify any of the 10 commandments. I think that is silly because he goes and interviews hundreds of people and only keeps the funny ones or the ones for his naratives. She has a lot of good points about how to teach morals and I believe that is important, but there are a ton of youth these days who do have morals. In fact I believe that most do,. I don't like older generations bashing on younger ones or visa versa.

After spending a very frustrating 35 minutes trying to figure out the power toon, I gave up on creating one. I did read the article so I'm going to state what I learned. The article talked about how we injure the poor by trying to raise low wages, control rent prices, and give welfare benefits to unmarried mothers and their illegitimate children. Low paying jobs are for unskilled inexperienced workers and if we raise wages then the employer has to raise the price of goods which in hurts the consumer who has to pay for it. if the consumer doesnt pay for it then the business fails. Welfare to unmarried woman only teaches them to keep doing what they are doing they choose to marry welfare instead of the man. It teaches men to not work hard to support the family. So much money has been given to the poor in past 30 years yet poverty exists because they arent motivated to do anything else. Poverty needs to be redefined. Lower rent means the landlord wont buy any property anymore or cant make repairs to the property. then only those that can afford it buy properties and higher rents still exist. In order to have low rent, landlords need tax breaks. I think that in a way it makes sense what the article was saying but I dont think it's that easy. Sometimes people dont have the means to become more educated or sometimes a woman may be left to be a single mom through no fault of her own. There are many people who work very hard and still cant get ahead.
