As farms improved their technology and reduced the work needed to be done by a farmer, the economy ended up needing an increase in labor. Factories spread all throughout the nation, but not in a slow paced organized fashion. Most of them were grouped in urban areas, especially in the Northeast, around the Great Lakes, and on the West Coast. So the American workforce began to migrate from the countryside to the city.

Urban areas were population centers having at least 8,000 people, only a modest-sized town by modern standards. By 1900 that number grew to a third. In just 40 years the urban population increased four times, while the number of people had doubled. In 1900, an American was twenty times more likely to move from the farm to the city than the other way around. The 1920 census declared that for the first time, a majority of Americans lived in the city.

The change in technology had made a huge impact on the society. Everyone was living in closer more compact environments. The cities got very dirty and were hard to maintain due to this increase. Everyone from farms didn't early need to work on farms anymore due to tractors and other tools to make farming quick and easy. Factories were also very popular during this time as well.
