 In the poem, “A Noiseless Patient Spider,” Whitman uses many connotative words to give the story a more dramatic effect and help the audience paint a more vivid picture of the message Whitman is trying to spread across. In stanza 1, line 2, it states, “I mark’d where on a little promontory it stood isolated.” In this quote, Whitman uses ‘promontory,’ meaning high land. This symbolizes how the spider was giant and mighty at first, having the high ground and looking down at the empty land it saw. Before exploring the world and reaching out of this isolated area. In stanza 2, Whitman uses the word, ‘gossamer.’ “Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul.” Whitman's diction in this stanza emphasizes how the spider is breaking out of its comfort zone and journeying to the world around it.   In “A Noiseless Patient Spider” the spider represents Walt Whitman’s soul. The spider continuously is reaching and searching for something outside what it has seen or another place, person or reason to hold onto. When the spider “stood isolated Mark'd how to explore the vacant vast surrounding”. It emphasized the loneliness and longingness of Whitman's soul. “Till the bridge you will need be form'd, till the ductile anchor hold, Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul.”  This transition from the spider to the soul, shows the relationship of the world to one’s soul or self; in which in the midst of its isolation wants to reach out further. The spider is not ordinarily used as a symbol for the soul, the most common [animal] would be a bird, but from this poem shows the search of one’s soul clearly.

Whitman brings up evidence of this claim many times in the poem. He states in stanza 1, line 1, “I mark’d where on a little promontory it stood isolated.” This line represents how the spider lives, or how Whitman lives—standing isolated, miles away from civilization and any form of life. This spider has nothing else but its thoughts as if trapped. However, Whitman uses this quote on line four in stanza one, “It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself.” This quote then informs the reader of the next step in the spider's journey, exploring and making connections with the world. Whitman uses the term filament to indicate how the spider is reaching out and exploring again and again. When Whitman incorporated “I mark'd where on a little promontory it stood isolated,” it shows the spider’s loneliness in isolation away from everyone else. Thus influencing the reason behind beginning its journey; which follows into the idea of connection. Whitman uses the webs of the spider to, one; show attachment and two, to show the effort the spider is making to reach out and connect. Shown in the first and second stanza “ It launch'd forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself, Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them. ``And Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul.” Showing resolve of the spider and the effort it is making to continuously try to find the “anchor” to itself.
