My first time to light up a qulliq with the help of Becky Kudloo. Today was my first time to be around a qulliq so I will tell the stories that Becky told us. Becky told us that the qulliq was their only source of light and heat in their tent and iglu during the nights. She also told us about what they use to light it up, she said they use arctic cotton that they pick from the land. They use the oil from a seal, and she said the men had to go hunting a lot so they don’t run out of oil for the qulliq. They had to use a specific kind of white rock for the flint to light up the qulliq. To shut it or to control the height of the flame, they would use a stick made out of soapstone to shut it or control the height of the flame.

I had pinched the cotton/maniq to align on the qulliq, the cotton had been dipped in cooking oil (seal oil is usually used) and lit up with matches, then spreader the fire in a horizontal line. To shut off the fire we used the whole front end of the stick.

Watching an Elder light a qulliq was so nice to watch because she explained how to do lit it up. She was saying they picked up some cotton from the land to use for it to lit it up.. she said that it would be picked during fall time, because that’s when the cotton would start growing.

It was my first time lighting up a traditional qulliq. I liked it a lot and the guest who brought it told us stories on how she used to lived when houses and communities weren’t here yet and I was amazed when she told us when she lit up her qulliq it stayed on throughout the night and kept the tent and igloo warm
