Socialism developed as a response to capitalism. Socialism is public ownership of property and the means of production in the name of equality. So, a company would share all the profits a company would make(spreading the wealth), where as capitalism only the owner would benefit from the profits. Communism is a spin-off of socialism. Many communist leaders had the same idea of "sharing the wealth and being equal" but have different ways of providing this equality.

Many believe the industrial revolution began in great Britain, which was very powerful but small in terms of land, population and available resources. This gives them an incentive to colonize areas where there are large amounts of raw material instead of just paying for the materials. After colonization, they now have the ability to take these materials back to the homeland to produce their product.

In nomadic groups there were social classes that set everyone apart; men were on top and women were on the bottom.
