This image may be familiar to some of you if you enjoy vintage video games -- it's the classic logo for Atari, the company that built some of the first home video game consoles that were commercially successful. For me, when I see this logo, I think of not only Atari the company, but specifically the Atari 7800 -- my first video game console. I was in third grade when my dad bought it. That machine was the best.

Lightbulb

The lightbulb is a perfect example of a sign that we did not discuss in class, and more specifically, the lightbulb itself carries multiple meanings, which shows the complexity of human communication. The lightbulb can symbolize light of course, but it can also represent the formation of a new idea, or a eureka moment that someone had. Typically when people hear the word lightbulb, both meanings come to mind, and it is a complex sign in which interpretation and context can give someone more clarity in understanding which way it is being used.

A sign we did not discuss in class that represents a symbol would be this traffic light. I chose this because each light signifies a certain meaning: red means stop, yellow means proceed with care, and the green light means go. These are signs we see in our everyday lives. As humans, we have all collectively agreed that this sign has this specific meaning, and this sign keeps us safe! Without this, every road would be so hectic, and no one would know what to do, so I believe this also brings great significance to our society.

Dark cloud

the beach hazard flags are a great example of a sign because there are no words but we must look at the color of the flag to interpret if the water is safe or if any hazards are present. it is a common system that lifeguards and coastguards have created to aid in beach safety to the public. the water can be deceiving, it may look calm but there could be a very dangerous undercurrent that could be deadly, or even marine life thats hazardous.

Wet Floor Sign

I choose a wet floor sign because we didn't discuss this one in class. It is a sign we see all the time whenever we go to a restaurant, store, or a school. As humans we collectively agreed that when there is a wet floor we need to have a sign to alert people to be careful. It is a required sign in most establishments.

skull and crossbones

I chose this because it means danger, maybe death! Taken literally, you could end up as a skull and crossbones if you ingest this substance; walk any further, cross this bridge, enter this house! It also reminds me of Halloween, so for me it reminds me of my favorite time of year and my favorite thing to do when I was a kid, which is be whatever I wanted to be, go trick-or-treating, and hopefully visit just about anything haunted!

Batman Symbol-Anthony Caldi

This is the Batman symbol and everyone should be familiar with it even if you are not a fan. This symbol represents truth and justice. When I see this symbol, I see it as both a warning to criminals, as well as a beacon of hope to those who live in fear. The symbol is a promise to stop crime the right way, without any lethal action being taken.

Exit Sign - Lynn Grogan

Whether you're leaving a building or an aircraft, your attention is usually directed to this sign right here. An exit sign is often a symbol of where you should go if there is ever an emergency and you need to leave the area quickly. They're often illuminated as well so that you can always see it, even if it's dark outside and you're not sure where to go.

Netflix Logo

Some people may look at this sign and just see a streaming service (Netflix), but to me this symbol represents entertainment, relaxation, and getting a chance to spend quality time with my family and friends. Whether I’m bored by myself or hanging out with others, I always like to throw on a show or movie on Netflix to keep myself entertained. Netflix has been around for most of my life and I even remember back around 2010 when my mom would order a movie online and Netflix would send the dvd through the mail. Whenever I see this symbol, I am reminded of the great memories that comes with Netflix.

I chose an X because it has a negative tone to it and is often seen as something wrong or bad. The X can have multiple purposes depending on the situation and how it is used. The red X is more seen as more of negative thing.

Waiting Countdown Cross Walk Sign

For me, a sign that comes to mind is the countdown signal at the crosswalk. Whether I am driving or walking, this countdown gives me a heads up on how much time I have before the light changes. When I see this sign, I know how much time I have left before I can go, which is important when, hypothetically, I may want to make it at the last second to cross the street.

A locked door is a symbol that can mean many things. If you know someone is inside, this could be a sign that they do not want visitors. If the door is locked, it could also mean that the person inside is having strong feelings that they do not want to express like anger or sadness. It could also be a meaning of a place where you are not allowed to enter. A locked door in an abandoned building could mean danger, likewise a construction site. It could also mean that you do not have the authority to enter like if an important meeting is happening.

Laundry signs

Laundry signs inform us on how to care for the clothing/ materials we have purchased. These are important because if you wash a piece of clothing, such as a silk dress, you risk ruining the material, thereby leading to discarding something you've barely worn. These signs are on every type of fabric on every object.

Footprints would be an example of an indexical sign as it represents that someone or something has walked here. Though they may be long gone at the point where you reached the prints, they left a trail showing that they were there. It's a sign that others have walked this path and that we are not alone.

represents environmental responsibility and sustainability. It makes people think of reducing waste, reusing materials, and properly sorting trash. Even without words, the symbol communicates a widely understood message: place recyclable items here instead of throwing them away. It helps the environment out a ton and helps us save a lot of waste.

I chose ASL or American Sign Language as my sign for a couple reasons. One because ASL is communication purely through signs with complex little details that can change whole meanings. I find the diversity of signs amazing utilizing all parts of the upper body to convey meaning. It also stuns me as being a visual language something that would seem impossible to the rest of the speaking world.

A sign that we didn't go over in class would be an open sign. On the surface, this sign tells us the obvious, which is that a public place, such as a store or restaurant, is open. However, it is also seen as a permission to enter and almost a welcoming sign inviting people in.

Much like every other road sign, an animal crossing sign like this duck one is made to have drivers become aware they have entered a zone where ducks and ducklings cross by. This is a good sign because instead of just writing the words "Duck Crossing" on a sign, this uses images so people understand the animal they are looking out for. It might sound silly, but it is the use of the images that make it an effective sign. The same goes for the deer crossing signs as well. Overall, I believe this is a good sign because it uses images for people to implant in their mind of what to look out for and be aware.

For this assignment I chose a no trespassing sign. Obviously this sign means no trespassing on to private property or a dangerous area but growing up this sign always made me actually want to enter the building more than if it didn’t have one. Not a building like a house, but something like an abandoned mall or something like that. I really enjoyed urban exploration growing up and this sign was commonplace whenever I would do that with my friends.

Gas Tank on E- Dylan Wallace

This sign is signaling that your car is on E. This sign tells you that you need to stop at the nearest gas station. The sign can cause urgency to fill your car up with gas. The gauge going down to the big captial E, and the neon orange light that pops up makes you look for the nearest gas station instantly and creates urgency.
