My first memory of reading is my mother reading to me and my sister every night. Before we go to bed, we would pick one or two books each and she would read them. I remember I got so excited for this time and always took a while to pick the perfect one. And I wanted my book to be the last so I would always hide it under the blanket and show it as a surprise. Thinking now, it was like a bonding time for the three of us so it's a core memory for me.

My favorite book as a child was "Peter Pan". The moment I read Peter Pan I fell in love with the story immediately. After reading, Neverland became my safe place where I could just immagine about it anytime. I even watched the movie after reading the book as well. The ending, Wendy growing old and Peter meeting her broke my heart so bad that I would always close before the last page. Thinking that Peter would fly all the way to my window, I would open the window and go to bed. My mom always had to close it for me. Since then, Peter Pan has always been my favorite character.

3. What I Read in Elementary School

I spent my first year of elementary school in Canada, so I read a lot of English books. For example, "Amelia Bedelia" was one of my favorites. In the second year, I came back to Korea. Almost for 6 months, I didn't really read a lot because when I came back I could speak fluent English but wasn't good at reading and writing and for Korean, I couldn't speak, read, and write that well. So I was very stressed and confused in the new environment and shut myself down. But starting from my second year things got a bit better and that's when I started to read again. My favorite was a Korean book called "너도 하늘말나리야, You're a Tiger Lily"

When I first read a book to someone else was I was in middle school. There was a library near my house and they were looking for volunteers who could read English books to elementary students. So I volunteered there for a semester.
The student that I read to was 10 years old. At first, I didn't really know what to do because it was my first time reading to someone else. However, I thought about how my mom read to me and started to ask questions while reading, trying to stimulate his imagination. In the beginning, he was very shy and had a hard time understanding English but as time went by he began to choose the books that he wanted to read with me and became very active which is one of the reasons that made me want to become a teacher.(not now anymore but still) On the last day, I kind of knew that I wouldn't be able to see him again so I hugged him and he said that he'd remember me. I sometimes wonder how he grew up.

The first time I cried so bad while reading a book was in middle school. I remember that I just finished the book the day I started. It's called "The Tunnel". The story is about a man, getting stuck inside a tunnel on his daughter's birthday while driving because it crumbled down. He survives for months just by thinking of going back to his family, to his wife and daughter. At first, he doesn't eat the cake that he bought. After his phone dies he slowly goes mad inside the tunnel but doesn't let go of hope. Outside the tunnel, everyone tries to save him but an accident happens during the rescue. People started to give up because they didn't even know if he was alive or not. His wife gives up as well. The only way the man was communicating was the radio and he hears his wife saying that it's over. At that moment he screams at the top of his lungs and burns himself. That's how the world knew he was there. Because of the guilt his wife suicide with her daughter. The details in the book was so intense that I was literally in the tunnel with him. I will probably never forget this experience.

When Reading Started to Give Pressure & Turned into an Overwhelming Activity

Until middle school, I read at least 2 books a week. I wasn't a fan of English books, to be honest, so instead I read a lot of Korean bildungsroman and fantasy books. But after going to high school, my studies got intense and I didn't have the time to read for pleasure. The education system in Korea is pretty harsh and everyone was trying so hard to get into a decent university. The books that I read were uploaded in my application for university and I had to remember the storyline, author, what I learned, and how it changed me etc. The pressure was just too much for me to handle. So I barely read the books that I wanted to and eventually reading became a hard task for me.

Every teacher said in class that making reading as a habit is the most important thing that will affect your life later in the future. At that time I didn't understand what that meant. But now I do. Even though I didn't read that much in high school compared to when I was younger, I still had the passion and interest in reading itself. And by reading the vocabulary and the expressions that you use gets much richer. I felt that a lot from my sister. I never seen someone who reads more than her. Actually, she wouldn't hang out with me when we were kids because she wanted to read. So i would sometimes hide her books so she would spend time with me. Anyways, not only her word choices but in her studies as well, the way she understands and reads long texts while studying her major it's another level. Whatever job you get in the future I believe that knowing how to read with patience is very important.

Starting from high school, I had a lot of things happening in my life. So after coming to university, I started to read some books that helps me control my emotions and my thoughts. For example, one book I started to read was "The Journey to the Heart". Also, when I read romance books, it feels like I'm in their world not too involved but makes me forget about reality so I enjoy them as well. Recently I bought a book called "The Summer I Turned Pretty". I haven't started yet but I would very much like to as soon as possible. Normally, all the books that are used in class are difficult to actually get deeply involved I would say, so in my free time I prefer to go for something not to deep.

After I got into Uni, there was an English Camp held in school. I worked as a "TA(Teaching Assistant)" and taught elementary school students how to read, write and speak in English. Until 18, I wanted to be a teacher so I genuinely enjoyed every moment. Some of the students lacked confidence so I always tried to cheer them up, telling them that it's okay to be a slow reader. After that I got promoted as a coordinator and I added a storybook time session. Before class starts, students would read aloud, discuss with their classmates and so on. There is this camp for this winter as well so I'm thinking of how to make some change to be better for students.

How I Like to Read

For me, when I start to read, I have to prepare a lot. I'm not sure how this will sound like but when I read a book, I get into it too deep so sometimes it kind of takes time for me to get out of it. When I start reading, it has to be quiet, music yes but without lyrics. I love the ocean so I listen to wave ASMR or it's way better if it really rains. I like to read on my desk or in my bed with a drink. Water, tea, hot chocolate or something. I'm not that good at memorizing characters' names so when I just start reading I write down the main characters that I need to know. I'd prefer to read at night when it's quiet so I that I can concentrate much better.
