I don’t have many of these as I am quick to have a conference with parents about my expectations and the student’s expectation in the classroom. For those still refusing, they know they can’t work in groups or partner work if they don’t participate in the work, and they are usually quick to do their work.

I pull the student in the doorway to talk to them about their behavior. Most of the time they correct it. If they can not correct their behavior on their own I call their guardian.

For those without an IPad, they have to work on notebook paper. No pencil, they can use a colored pencil or I will “check one” out for them. No notebook? They have to work on notebook paper and put it on their notebook when they bring it back.

My kids are in groups of 4. If students refuse to listen or follow rules and be quiet when needed they are pulled to sit facing the wall and as well as that they are not able to interact in class. If they want to interact they have to follow rules and not be moved to keep distractions down.

I keep my pad of post it notes next to me and when a student refuses to work, after the second warning, their name goes on my detention list for lunch detention. They know what it means when I pick up my post it notes. Frequent flyers get a call home if they are continually not participating in class and get written up as a class incident. Disrespectful students get written up as an office referral. I expect all students to show respect and I do not tolerate disrespect.

Seating arrangements, one on one conversations, and redirections are the first steps I take. If these are not effective, I contact the parent and begin documenting in Review360. I do not only contact the parent to tell them their child is in trouble but I also take the time to ask if they have any feedback about what works with their child and what does not.

If I have tried all of these things or if the student’s behavior is incredibly severe, the student receives an office referral so that admin can give consequences.

I do not engage with disrespect. My word is law. If the student chooses not to follow rules or participate, they will receive their natural consequences.

If a student is missing supplies (clothes/shoes), they will have points deducted. Depending on the circumstance, I may lend them clothes to use for the year.

Oh, they gonna do the work. We build relationships at the beginning of the school year so they have the expectations and know that they have to do the work. They get the “Mad Black Momma” speech when they aren’t prepared or whatever.

Let them use one of the 5 iPads. Most of the time the iPad is not charged. If the behavior continues not bring materials, I will cal parents to give them a heads up.

Reenforce the expectations, remind, warn, call parent, office referral, document, document, document, repeat.
Provide what is needed, but limit if it is constant and I know it is a choice. I will still give the pencil, but they usually have to hear from me about it and their parent will hear from me as well. I am at the point of making a list of students who are not bringing iPads charged.
