In the book the main character Charlie has been taken away from her immediate family. She doesn't like living in her new place in Colby, NC. She thinks the kids are hillbilly kids. Every new student has a Backpack  Buddy. Charlie's is Howard. She is often rude to him at times and does not want him to sit with her on the bus. In the book, it has explained various problems that Charlie has endured. This lets me know, although she can be rude, she is also strong.
