Another way I have used this technique is game based learning were the instructor uses competitive exercises for the class.

In one of my classes last year when learning about the scientific method the teacher allowed us to do an experiment and test our hypothesis. After we tested the hypothesis we would write up, present, and defend the findings to a panel of teachers and students.
