The song addresses how social standing and patriotism play role with each other. The song was released at the peak of the Vietnam War in 1969. The lyric opening "Some folks are born, silver spoon in hand." refers to how some people are born with inheritance of high social class and these are the people showing their patriotism, directly connecting to the second line "Ooh, they're red, white and blue". The song titled "Fortunate Son" referring to those born into power which got to choose deferment and had a say in what they wanted. Exclaiming that the people in power were the ones safe and the poor men were the ones putting their life at risk on the front line of war. Fogerty says himself "It's the old saying about rich men making war and poor men having to fight them."

Young Dumb & Broke

The song "Young Dumb & Broke" directly correlates with the message in "Fortunate Son". In Fortunate son, it talks about people being born into power, being safe from the war. However, being poor made you subjected to being drafted in war. Compared to our generation now, war has not being nearly as dominant as the 1950's-1970's. In the song it states "Yeah, we're just young, dumb and broke, But we still got love to give." This can correlate to the young kids in the draft, that were losing their youth, and when they would come back, if they would come back, they would be in the same condition as the left. Which correlates directly to kids these days who are trying to make careers in music, they are often broke for a while until they blow up. An example of this is Khalid, a broke high school kid until he blew up.
