The purpose of writing instruction is to engage students in the writing process in a variety of different ways. The writing process is adaptable and messy. There is not always one clear cut pathway to becoming a successful writer. Celebrate the small successes along the way and stick with it even throughout the struggles. When we are able to successfully teach the writing process to our students, we are able to help grow them into people who will be able to successfully communicate throughout their lives.

Writing is an inherently useful skill, which I will strive to teach effectively and with excellence. It has far reaching implications across multiple content areas, each with its own unique needs and requirements. I will encourage my cross-departmental contacts to include writing instruction in order to foster the development of this skill. Writing is not only helpful in an academic setting, but also in the professional, “real world” setting. If students do not know how to effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas, then they will be unable to express their wants, needs, and larger desires to lead to the accomplishment of their greater goals, both personally and professionally. This will ultimately lead to a failure to realize the mode of living that best aligns with their personal designs for their own lives. In a sense, learning to write and communicate effectively creates a sort of domino effect that is far reaching, with outsized negative consequences when compared to a failure to acquire other skills in the classroom. Therefore the teaching of writing is the teaching of goal attainment and desire communication.

Writing instruction is key in all content areas. All thought has to be communicated somehow, and need for demonstration dictates that we have to write it down. We can’t demonstrate our mastery of a concept without being able to articulate the mastery. Being able to effectively describe a concept will help prove your understanding. Being able to take your thoughts from an internal comprehension to a demonstrative explanation of that comprehension or mastery is an artform. It’s also a struggle, especially for teenagers who are used to a sort of terminally-online text speak where they can constantly update their thoughts with an additional text message.

Before students can understand that the writing process is not actually cyclical, they need to have an opportunity to get in and get their hands messy, so to speak. That said,. allowing kids to word vomit might be helpful, but honestly, that’s what I get already in their writing. The skill that needs to be taught is how they can refine it into something clear, concise, and– dare I say– professional-adjacent? Explaining writing in an accessible way and in a way that is not PUNISHING– so many kids think of writing assignments as a punishment!!-- is key for their ability to 1) graduate from school itself and 2) survive in the real world.

Writing is the key to everything, especially early in your career. You hear things like, “Write a cover letter.” “Write a resume.” “Explain to me why you are right for the job.” Kids who can’t speak off the cuff might want to write down their thoughts to make themselves sound more organized. If they can’t write, of course they can’t articulate the thoughts orally.

Students often come to us with little-to-no prior writing experience (or at least little-to-no working memory of it) and need assistance reaching grade level. Because of this, it is as important to instruct students on the writing process as it is to instruct them on the content that they are writing about. While writing practice occurs often in my classroom, teaching students the process of writing is something I need to improve upon. As stated in the writing guidebook, “Teaching students the writing process is crucial for developing their skills as effective communicators. Because writing is a dynamic and recursive process, student writers need to be taught specific strategies they can flexibly apply as they repeat and revisit the stages in the writing process when developing a piece of writing (The Writing Rope, 2023)” (Pg. 3). The lack of direct instruction into the process of writing can cause my students to become confused about the expectations and value in their writing practice, often resulting in disorganized or incomplete products that don’t actually reach the learning targets I intended for them to aim for. Due to this insufficiency in writing instruction in my classroom, I plan to focus on incorporating more pre-writing instruction into my lesson planning in the future, such as the topic choice and brainstorming strategies outlined in pages 4-6 of Recommendation 3.

Writing allows students to express ideas and knowledge to others based on their understanding. It is a reciprocal process to reading so it can strengthen the ability to decode because of the process of encoding. If, one compliments the other then I need to allow students time to read each other's writing and provide feedback using strategies like the peer feedback protocol.

Students develop a voice through writing and it is a form of communication that is vital to be a contributor in the workforce.. Sharing that voice through peer feedback opportunities would allow my students to have clear examples of voice through their classmates writing.

Teachers need to focus on this instruction and provide specific feedback for students to grow in their skills. The writing guidebook states “When students feel connected to one another and to the teacher, they may feel safer in participating in the writing process and sharing their writing with others (IES, 2012).” It is an effective way for teachers to gauge a student’s understanding of the content they teach while keeping the focus on feedback.

The important thing about writing instruction is that you teach students to use it in everyday life. Although many students see writing as a task that is only useful in school, it is one of the most beneficial things we can teach.

Currently the writing practices that are happening at my school revolve around standards based writing. This is helpful in preparing students for future academic success. It allows students to show the direction of their thoughts. The implications of this strategy is that we are building lifelong writers.

I intend to bring fever dream writing and peer feedback back to my school. This will allow us to create a community of writers as referenced in the Guidebook (Recommendation 1.)

As teachers it is essential that writing is considered to be extremely important for our students because it is our job to create thoughtful, purposeful, creative writers that can become future authors as well as communicate effectively as lifelong learners and productive citizens.. Students need to understand that writers write to entertain, persuade, justify, and clarify anything that they want to share with their readers. They should have the opportunity to do this across the curriculum. Teachers must model this for our students because they cannot naturally become writers without being shown the process of being messy, sharing ideas, and revising and editing by using organization and changing ideas. We need to build in time to provide feedback from other readers. Teachers should instill in students that writing is a life skill that is needed to communicate in the real world and we have to teach our students how to write in a professional manner that will convey their message to the reader. While every student may come in at a different writing stage, through modeling, practice, and feedback we can grow successful writers.

In my district there is a lack of explicit writing instruction for students receiving specially designed instruction in the area of written expression. This gap has occurred as a result of requirements placed upon EC programs to only use evidence based interventions in the EC setting. As a result, most students receiving SDI on the resource continuum are taught using scripted curriculums which are district mandated and combine reading and writing instruction. While a variety of programs are in use in the district, all fail to provide explicit routine instruction in writing at our students’ instructional level. Those few programs that do have writing instruction as a component do not consider the common occurrence of students who are reading at a higher level than they are writing. I hope to share some of the evidence based strategies shared today with my colleagues so they can use the materials available to them in order to create meaningful writing opportunities for their students within the constraints of their classrooms. I hope that the copy/change approach will be a functional recommendation for our resource teachers to utilise the readings from their curriculum as accessible mentor texts. I would also like to share with my colleagues about the considerations for worthy mentor texts as some of our curriculum materials provide more of a non-example (lack of capitalisation, poor sentence structure, etc) and should not be emulated by our student writers.

Writing instruction is important for students so that they have the necessary tools to express themselves in an academic setting. Whenever students are without the proper tools, their writing can be anything from good to awful, and without these tools, it can be very difficult to express mastery within a given concept. Writing across curriculum is paramount to student success. Students should not just view writing as solely an English class endeavor, but rather a necessary component to any and every school subject. Writing instruction is important, at its base level, for giving students the necessary tools to communicate and express themselves in a formal setting. These are tools that we as educators hope students will carry with them beyond their years in education and into a professional setting. It is not so much what to say as it is how to say it, and when students can pick up the framework of writing, I hope that they realize that they have so much choice when it comes to composition

Writing instruction is important for a multitude of reasons. It is most needed for effective communication when tone and style shifts are necessary. The rhetorical process is dependent upon the audience and purpose. Students struggle to write appropriately for the context at hand. Diction, syntax, structure, and choice of detail differ based on purpose. For example, writing an inform and explain document for work is different from composing an argument you hope to win against a spouse or a stubborn child. Another important part of writing is the SEL connection it provides. Informal writing provides catharsis and a coping mechanism; through the written word, students grapple with their own internal conflicts, weighing their options to wrestle with pros and cons. It is an internal monologue. Furthermore, writing is tied to reading. You often hear that writers are readers. Once a student understands why a writer uses a certain style he/she can emulate that skill, hopefully allowing it to creep into his own work. Because of the importance of writing instruction, I need to be more cognizant of the frequency in which my students write. Therefore, I will do this by integrating writing notebooks into each class period and not by making tasks graded or critiqued. This change is supported by research that states increased frequency is necessary for growth, and it helps students feel less intimidated by the process and provides them an outlet for self-expression and creativity without the threat of being judged. So an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to increase writing opportunities.

Writing instruction is important because it allows students the ability to collect their thoughts and organize them in a coherent way. When I think about effective writing instruction, it needs to be practiced daily. Once the fear of writing is alleviated through daily repetition, students can more skillfully formulate their thoughts. This is valuable in the classroom but also in life. The ability to use language can help people get jobs, convince a potential mate to go on a date, or win an election, so writing instruction has a lasting impact on a student’s lives moving forward regardless of their future endeavors.

Writing instruction is about making students live with the consequences of their actions.

All of my students need to spend more time just sitting with what they have written. AP students have to consider how to strategically communicate their ideas instead of just spewing everything that comes into their brains (so that they can prove that they “really do get it”). My standard students usually use write to be done and then move on with their lives. They think writing a sentence will get the teacher off their back. Students need to go through the process of thinking and planning and writing and fixing what they’ve written. So, true writing instruction - dedicated time and attention to writing - forces them to sit with their thoughts and their intentions.

Additionally, they have to face what they produce. Unlike social media, which just sends their thoughts into the ether without any kind of accountability, writing instruction makes them reflect on what they have done. More intentionally, writing instruction must force students to reflect on their own choices and products. Rather than funneling everything through the writing expert in the room, students must deal with their own writing. Does it make sense? Is it strategic? Do they even understand it when they revisit it several days later? (“Well, it made sense in my head at the time.”)

Because writing should be a snapshot of what they believed to be true at that moment in time. And students deserve to enjoy the beauty of what they create.

While that goal seems lofty and perhaps unattainable, I will pursue it. An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to provide opportunities for my standard students to write in risk-free contexts. I will do this by posing journal prompts about the texts we will read. Not by lowering my expectations for ALL writing. This change is supported by Recommendation 1 and helps students become more comfortable in the process of writing.

Writing instruction is very important at all stages of education. It is essential with younger students for them to be able to put their thoughts into a logical order, as well as be able to use creative thinking to create something that is unique to them. When students get older it becomes important for them to have a more formal structure in order to prepare for the writing tasks they will face as they grow as students and become (hopefully) lifelong learners. Many job opportunities also require some degree of writing in order to be successful. Employers want to hire an individual who can articulate their thoughts and writing is a great way to practice this skill. Those students that are strong writers typically are better speakers and communicators and have a love of reading. Vocabulary is built by writing practice and vocabulary is essential for being successful in everyday life situations. Writing does not always have to be formal and the spoken language that is improved is helped because spelling and grammar doesn’t usually come across in verbal communication. So an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to choose prompts and topics that are relevant to where my students see themselves going in their lives and education. Since writing instruction is important, I want to share with my students how it is specifically important to them and their individual goals.

Writing instruction is valuable because it enhances our reading. Reading requires us to identify the ideas of the author, visualize the characters or settings, understand the argument of the writer, learn something new, or have a different perspective. When a reader becomes a writer, the reader must consider how best to communicate his/her ideas. The writer must have something important to say or a story to share. The writer is usually passionate about the idea or story.

Whether it’s the ability to write about an issue in the world, an issue on campus, or in response to a general prompt, once a student realizes they can effectively share their particular views, their confidence will skyrocket. The ability of students to express their views in writing is critical to helping them develop their sense of self. Ideas can be buried deep inside like seeds, and strong writing allows the seed to bloom. Take, for example, a student who may have personally experienced hunger. Their ability to express themselves effectively, and perhaps know they are not alone in their challenge, could empower them to find solutions.

In addition to building confidence, writing instruction can help students think critically. To write effectively, a writer must wrangle with ideas and challenge themselves to think outside the box. A good writer doesn’t simply reference the text they are responding to, they elaborate using their own voice, also known as commentary.

Writing instruction is important because it provides a guide for students to communicate their thoughts, ideas, and responses. Students need guidance in order to convey their thoughts and responses in a manner that can be understood by the reader. One stream of consciousness does not necessarily communicate with another. Similar to comprehending literature, writing is often communicated and understood based on personal values, experiences, interests, and knowledge. Communicating the message becomes the task of the writer to take steps needed to make their writing accessible to the reader. The goal and purpose of the writing piece is important to consider because this will drive specific components of the end product.

If we want to provide effective writing instruction, we need to approach the task in a planned and systematic method within the context of student generated writing samples.

An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to include more modeling. I will do this by asking for student volunteers to share their response to journal prompts/questions and write their responses on the board, not by modeling my own response. Readers are impacted both positively and negatively through writing. If the reader cannot understand what the writer is presenting, then the writing is futile. A paper with incorrect grammar and punctuation reflects lack of knowledge and experience on the writer’s behalf. Lack of support for thoughts is often frowned upon too. Readers enjoy having data and research to reflect on. Finally, papers lacking a clear and concise way of expressing thoughts become hard to understand.

An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to incorporate it daily.

Writing is a way for students to get their thoughts down on paper and can drive their thinking. It is a lot easier for some students verbalize on paper than by speaking. By giving them a chance to draft their thoughts, they can process what they are thinking in their head and decide what’s important enough to keep in the revision process. As teachers, we can take the time to model good writing with students so they have the foundational skills as a starting point, and the practice given to them gives them the freedom to write without fear of being right or wrong or stressing about negative feedback. We can also model peer feedback as well, so students get better at deciding what strengths can be found in writing. When I think about how I want my students to process their own thoughts more effectively, I think about teaching them how to improve their peer editing skills which they are severely lacking in. If they can see writing strengths in other’s writing, they can see them in their own writing as well. Because writing instruction is so important to students being able to process their thoughts, creating a more consistent writing routine in my classroom is the next logical step. I will do this by rearranging my daily routines to include specific writing instruction. I can do this by using the literature we are currently reading as models for the type of writing practice they lack, not by adding anything extra to my plate or my students’ workload. Hopefully, by engaging my students in the writing process in a more intentional way, I can foster a sense of ownership of their own writing in my students.

Writing Instruction is important, not only because of how it supports reading and thinking, but because of its impact on spoken communication. Students often focus on communication solely through speech. Showing students how writing and reading impact thinking, listening, and speaking can be important in the world of the soundbyte, the tweet, and the TikTok. Writing can help us view language in a concrete form and show us how words link and connect and create ideas. Writing can show strategies that writers and speakers employ, that we can then use to decode the world of text and speech around us. It is a key to being able to take apart all the words, ideas, and rhetoric that are thrown at us in so many different media formats. If we want to provide effective writing instruction, we must make it varied and meaningful, while also providing different types and sources of feedback.

An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to change the purposes and types of writing my students do on a daily basis in class. I will do this by giving more specific and focused goals for writing activities and will offer frames to meet those particular goals, while providing success criteria. Not by only using constructed responses. This change is supported by recommendation 3–engaging students in the writing process for a variety of purposes–and could help my students see writing as more useful to their everyday purposes and less as something that can and should only happen in school. So an important change that I want to make to my writing instruction is to use a variety of purposes and approaches in order to show my students real-world writing activities throughout the semester.

Maya Angelou said it best: “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” Whether it’s creative or academic writing, learning how to effectively communicate ideas in writing is essential. Writing instruction is critical because it builds confidence and helps students think critically.

It is necessary to teach students how to write because it is a way for them to think critically, process thoughts and ideas, analyze evidence, and synthesize information. These skills will be useful to students in all aspects of life, regardless of what they chose to do after graduation; therefore, writing instruction is important because it is how students learn how to effectively convey their thoughts and ideas using syntax, sentence structure, vocabulary, etc.. Without writing instruction, students may not be able to appropriately express themselves and others may also misunderstand them.

The important thing about writing instruction is that students think critically.
Writing Instruction Builds Individuality and Digital Literacy Skills

Writing instruction builds independence, individuality, and confidence and critical thinking skills necessary for being a good digital citizen.

Learning to write helps an individual express themselves, their emotions, and imagination. It is through this expression that novel ideas can be created that have the potential to impact communities close to the writer and perhaps even the world.

On the other hand, writing instruction builds reading comprehension. This is a skill essential for individuals to understand the world around them, and, more specifically, what other people are writing and saying. For example, through writing complex sentences - ones with appositives and multiple clauses, the writer will understand those same types of sentences they read. They will understand how parts of the sentences connect and expand a simple idea.

Due to the presence of social media in our lives, the aforementioned skills become essential to being a good digital citizen. It is important to understand the opinions of those we encounter online and also to voice our own in a clear and coherent way. Since writing instruction is important, is essential for digital literacy, for building and maintaining positive social relationships, and for being a contributing member of society, I will change my writing instruction to better build the necessary critical thinking skills, reading comprehension, and teach students to explain, justify, and convince.

An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is increasing the time and amount of opportunities for students to receive feedback on their writing from both myself and students’ peers. I will do this by having weekly writing conferences with each student that last no longer than 5 minutes. I will not do this by handing back their writing with a grade. This change is supported by the idea that self-reflection, personalized feedback, and guidance based on their specific writing needs helps students by creating a supportive writing environment. So an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is providing individual feedback.

Teachers should be practicing writing every day in class as a way for students to become more fluent readers. Writing and reading are directly connected; if students can encode, they can decode. Consequently, students who are better writers are better readers.

Writing is also important because it is a life skill that students need to know effectively in order to be productive citizens. Writing is a way we communicate; if students are unaware of how to write, they will be unable to communicate their thoughts. As teachers, it is our job to support students in their writing instruction through planning, organization, and revision of their work. Students can become effective writers with sufficient instruction, modeling, and practice.

If we want to provide effective writing instruction, we must be intentional about the way we teach.

The importance of writing instruction is to give students the tools they need to not only write effectively, but also to learn how to have a voice of their own. In order to communicate effectively in their writing, a student needs to understand the mechanics of writing and how all the parts work together, e.g. spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure, etc. to create a clear message. But the soul of writing is not just the how, it is the why. E.g., what bigger message or idea am I trying to present to the world? These ideas connect us as human beings and offer a deeper meaning behind just the content of the writing. It helps us understand one another’s unique voice. Consequently, learning how to use stylistic devices and turns of phrases are imperatives in writing instruction for students to discover their own voices. When this happens, writing becomes enjoyable and the art of creating something new with their words connects students to the broader world around them and allows them to engage in a larger conversation.

Since this is so important, a critical change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to establish a thriving writing culture in my classroom. I will do this by establishing daily writing practices and regular feedback between peers and the teacher and celebrating their success, thereby helping students achieve enjoyment with and the mastery of writing skills. This will not be achieved by direct instruction and rubrics alone. This change is supported by Recommendation 1, Strategies 1 and 2, and helps students feel comfortable with putting their thoughts on paper and sharing their ideas with one another. So an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to establish a thriving writing culture in my classroom.

Writing instruction is important as it allows students to express their ideas, thoughts, and beliefs. Through this, they can grow, understand, and discover their thought processes in their writing. However, the question is, what do you do when a student doesn’t know what to write? I read somewhere that the act of writing can generate ideas. Not necessarily in the way brainstorming does, in which you come up with as many ideas as you can that connect to a topic, but in a way that your brain becomes this idea machine that is only activated once it’s turned on. As you write and as your brain warms up, other ideas start to seep out. Therefore, the act of writing turns on the brain; it gives the caffeine boost to wake up and come up with ideas as you write. This can be helpful if students need to reflect on an experience, get ready to speak in front of their peers, or brainstorm ideas for a major essay. Sometimes a single writing piece of writing can inspire great ideas.

When I think about effective writing instruction, it is important that it be done through gradual release and the use of a teacher exemplar. Writing instruction is very important because it allows the teacher to inform, instruct, and model for students what they want them to know, learn and be able to do. Clear Writing Instruction allow teachers to be able to give students explicit instructions and clarity for the task at hand. Writing instructions help to clarify the task for students and it allows the teacher to be succinct in telling/showing students what they are required to do. In giving clear writing instructions students are better able to write to the prompt as they become better at the craft of writing.

Writing is important for many reasons. You need writing for everyday life. It goes hand in hand with reading; if no one can write then there will be nothing to read. It helps students express themselves and get a deeper understanding of all texts. In the real world writing is needed to communicate with others both professionally and personally. In order for thoughts to be clear and coherent students need to understand the sentence structure and how to have a clear focus in their writing. Spelling is also essential so that their message is clear and conscious. One cannot ensure that the reader will understand what the student is trying to convey if they are not explicitly taught how to brainstorm ideas and given the freedom to express themselves when they put their ideas down on paper. Some students also need guidance to pull more thoughts and ideas out of them rather than just a small short thought. They have the ideas inside their brain but need guidance to think deeper, add details, and organize how they think.

Writing instruction is important because it gives students the tools to communicate effectively with others, especially in this digital world. So much communication happens through writing, whether it be emails, text messages, social media, or blogs.

Teaching writing also teaches students how to gather and organize their thoughts, how to justify their reasons, and how to elaborate and explain what they are thinking. When a student can organize their thoughts it allows them to clearly think about their own thinking. Without these tools, it would be difficult for the student to advance through college and various work opportunities.

Writing gives students a means to solve problems, create new ideas, develop relationships, and respond to the ideas of others. For instance, when encountering a difficult problem simply being able to give a written explanation of the difficulty allows one to ask for help or solutions. It also allows one to create new ideas by developing ideas that are written down. When a person writes down thoughts, it allows the brain space to develop more thoughts.

Since writing is such a critical skill for students to have in the 21st century, I need to make sure I’m focusing on all parts of the writing process. An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is focusing more on the revision process of process of writing. I will do this by teaching and clarifying the revision process for my students. Not by, just giving their papers back to them and saying, “Revise and Edit”. This change is supported by The Writing Guide and helps students focus on the high-order concerns of writing. So an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to focus more on the revision process of writing.

-TC

Students may be able to talk about a topic, but don’t know how to get it on paper. Once students are keyboard fluent, they can use something like a google doc to “brain dump” everything they know about their topic or try to reason to a conclusion based on what they know and what they can infer from what we’ve asked them to write about. Turning off autocorrect may aid students in this initial process so they don’t worry about how “pretty” their writing is - only that they are pouring their thoughts on the page.

When students are done with their “brain dump,” they can begin to organize their information by topic. They likely jumped from topic to topic and learning to go back and group information or evidence by topic requires them to evaluate and view their information with a critical eye. Grouping the pieces that refer to the same topic together helps them create organized paragraphs. If they need help understanding how to organize their information, they will use a copy/change strategy with a exemplar as a guide. (a different MJ)

Writing instruction is fundamental to any curriculum. Writing allows students to explore their ideas and interact with the ideas of others. Writing allows students to organize their thinking. Writing allows students to reflect upon what they learned, how they grew, what they would change moving forward. Writing allows for successful communication; writing allows for teachers to quickly assess gaps in learning.

Beyond writing for learning about academics, writing allows for self-expression and self-exploration. It allows students an outlet to process feelings, ideas, big emotions for which they may not yet have an outlet or the language to express them.

Teaching students to write and look at the writing of others helps them realize that writing is never perfect the first time. Everyone has shitty first drafts - even the writers we esteem and those included in the literary canon, wrote, revised, edited. Learning this is such a revelation. What a heavy weight lifted! I am just like those authors I love (or, as some of my students would say, am forced to read).

Since all students must take English II, an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to use the texts I teach in that course as mentor texts for daily writing. I will do this by following a process similar to the one I used today. I will have them respond to a prompt about themselves in a Google Document and share that document with me. As part of the daily lesson, I will embed some aspect of the text we are reading (as a mentor text) and ask them to copy/change some aspect from the original author. Then, I will ask them to make a similar change in their original drafts. I will not do this by assigning multiple essays with my tenth-grade students. Recommendations 1 and 2 support this change and helps students see themselves as part of a community of writers who have agency to engage meaningfully with the writing process.

So an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is having some sort of daily writing instruction anchored in mentor texts. Most days will probably focus on sentence-level scale, so writing instruction fits manageably into my short class time.

Teaching writing is important because it ties directly to students' ability to comprehend what they read, as well as decode new words. Also, it is important that students can structure a sentence, and a paragraph in order to organize their thoughts. Students will need to be able to one day write reports, research papers, fictional stories, as well as real world writing. They will one day be required of them in their professional lives. Students need to be able to put their thoughts on paper in order to explain their thinking. Research shows that when a student can read a word, as well as write the word, they better retain and comprehend the word or words. In today’s world of digital tools, teaching writing is valid as students need to be fluent in written expression in multiple areas of life.

-Amy Crow

Writing instruction is important because reading and writing have a connection. It's thought that when writing something down that we tend to remember it better. We can take what we have read and demonstrate how much we understand. It also helps us to communicate our thoughts. Our understanding of reading instruction can be assessed by our readers (our teacher or instructors). Therefore, it is important that we as educators incorporate writing into every discipline.

What students have learned during reading instruction can be assessed through writing in a few ways. When given a specific topic, we demonstrate how much we understand (this is the information we’ve read and/or discussed). The second thing that can be assessed is our ability to effectively communicate our thoughts about the information/topic. Lastly, for younger readers, the strengths and weaknesses of their basic word recognition can be assessed. These assessment can direct our instruction, allowing us to see the trending errors of our classroom.

If we want to provide effective writing instruction, an important change would be to implement it into all content areas, not just ELA instruction.

I will do this by taking a deeper look at my content to see how I can include writing in each content lesson allowing for an explanation, justification, description, etc. This change is supported by the Writing Guidebook. It will help students critically think and find purpose in writing. So an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is implementing writing into all content areas.

When I think about effective writing instruction, I think about writing as a way to demonstrate learning. As early literacy educators, writing gives us insight into the spelling patterns and mechanics that are challenging for students and can enable us to identify areas of weakness that we can target with our instruction. Writing is a means to an end. We can see students' ability to apply the necessary skills within writing. If a student is able to write a piece with a coherent main idea and details, they are more likely to understand the purpose of having and then identifying the main idea or details with a text. Having students’ writing which includes events occurring in a sequence should transfer to understanding the sequential order of a text. Writing can also help to increase students vocabulary which in turn aids in comprehension as well.

Reflecting on students’ ability to transition into the adult world and becoming a contributing member of society. Writing requires students to think critically. Schools have started to look like factory production. Students are completing check boxes and completing tasks but not creating or thinking beyond the coursework.

Aside from the benefits of the application of knowledge that students can showcase through writing, there is also encouraging students to write for sheer enjoyment. The possible cathartic experience may be something some students never have the opportunity to experience. Educators are always trying to find ways of hooking or engaging students, writing is a way to actively engage our students throughout the day.

An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to incorporate more mentor texts as a means to model professional writing. I will do this by identifying strong examples within a text and by explicitly teaching specific techniques used by authors. I will not only focus on the reading standards during instruction as I feel this leads to missed instructional opportunities for demonstrating good writing. This change is supported by linking the reading and writing ropes together. If we want to provide more effective writing instruction, then it is important to incorporate a variety of mentor texts that demonstrate specific writing techniques.

Writing is Essential JP

The important thing about writing instruction is that you make it a priority.

It’s like taking a shower.

You include it in your lesson plans.

You can have students write throughout the day.

But it is not expendable.

It sparks students’ creativity.

But the important thing about writing instruction is that you make it a priority.

Writing instruction is an essential part of effective literacy instruction. First, the teacher must model or share mentor text with the student. This will help students grow their vocabulary and see correct models of good writing. After teachers model students should be able to practice the skills taught.

Secondly, writing is a good way to build a classroom community. One example is having students share their writing drafts with a partner. In addition to building community, this can also teach students proper social skills, such as the polite way to ask questions or give compliments.

Also, writing instruction fosters creativity. One way to invite creativity into daily writing in the classroom is to give students a choice for what type of writing they would like to use, such as writing a poem or creating song lyrics. Journal writing daily in the classroom is also one way to get students thinking creatively. By letting them choose what they write, students must think creatively.

Additionally, students love to share their experiences. Therefore, having students write gives them the opportunity to do what they love, share! One example is letting peers share and co-edit their stories. It gives them time to share and be social, which we know they enjoy.

Finally, let’s be honest, students need these skills to be well-rounded adults. If they plan to go to college, they should be able to craft a compelling college essay. If we teach different writing techniques, students will have a plethora of tools in their toolboxes that will help them write those important essays. Even students who do not plan to go to college still need to be able to communicate by writing in other professions.

Simply stated, writing instruction is essential for all students.

Since writing instruction is important, I plan to make changes in my current writing instruction!

An important change I want to make in my writing instruction, is to model writing with mentor texts.

I will do this by introducing a new mentor text next week.

Not by replacing what I am already doing but using the mentor text to extend what we are already learning. For example, our knowledge unit is on the Civil War. Students will write journal entries from Hariet Tubman’s point of view. I will seek a mentor text made up of journal entries.

This change is supported by Recommendation 2 of the Writing Guidebook. The Recommendation 2 states that we should use strong mentor texts to model writing strategies for our students. So, an important change I want to make in my writing instruction is model writing with mentor texts.

When I think about the Writing instruction, it is important because it is the last level of understanding of any topic being learned. For example, if you are reading a text about Sharks and their habitats and are asked to share what you have learned through a written paper; the teacher can check your understanding of the topic through your written document.

When I was an EL teacher, I learned that the students could note exit the program because of the writing they had to complete. This is the last level of comprehension for all students.

Writing is important because it is a living document that shows your thinking. It can always be amended to add or take away ideas.

An important change that I want to make in my writing

instruction is to be more purposeful in my assignments for the students.

An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is making the writing process nonlinear. If I want to provide effective writing instruction, I will do this by explaining the parts of the writing process, not by teaching a ‘sequence’. This change is supported by DPI Recommendation #3 and helps students to adapt the process versus a concrete method. So an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is modeling the parts of the writing process, not steps.

The important thing about writing instruction is it encompasses a lot of different skills. It’s like learning how to read. You will start with learning to write complete sentences in Kindergarten and 1st grade. You can do it everyday for the rest of your life. But it doesn't have to take all day. It takes a lot of practice and it will continue getting better as you read, talk, and write daily. But the important thing about writing instruction is that it encompasses a lot of different skills.

Since writing instruction is important, we need to give our students many opportunities to learn how to do it.

An important change that I want to make in our writing instruction is promoting writing cross curricular in all grade levels at our school. I will do this by sharing portions of this PD during PLC meetings and suggesting writing opportunities in grade level planning meetings with my teachers. Not by just saying, “Write more.” This change is supported by knowledge of the importance of including writing in daily instruction and help students see writing as an essential part of the learning process. So an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is making an intentional effort to integrate writing opportunities into K-5 curriculum.

Writing instruction is important so that students can express themselves and have their voices heard in academic, business, and personal arenas. Students have valuable ideas and contributions, but understanding how to focus, organize, and develop their writing and use appropriate style and conventions can create barriers to their achievement. Their success in academic arenas often depends on how well they can complete written assignments to demonstrate their learning. If students cannot write what they are learning or thinking, it is an important indicator that they may not conceptually understand. Writing instruction is important to build their confidence. I have many adult college students who are afraid to write because they have never had any formal instruction in writing; their lack of self-efficacy makes them more likely to drop out of college or suffer in remedial courses because nobody ever taught them the skills they need to be successful. Writing and language are half of our curriculum in ELA, but it is just as important that students learn how to write in different content areas so they can communicate like historians, scientists, inventors, entrepreneurs, health professionals, military leaders, citizens, advocates, and any arena they pursue. Writing is a vehicle for social mobility and equity, so facilitating writing instruction is an ethical call of duty for all teachers.

The important thing about writing instruction is that you explicitly teach it. It’s like a train chugging up a mountain. You push and push until you see the beautiful landscape. You can put it in your memory.

But it isn’t stagnant. It travels and raises the cognitive bar. But the important thing about writing instruction is that you directly teach it

Because writing instruction is crucial for student empowerment and success, I will make a change in my writing instruction.

An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to emphasize brainstorming more as part of the prewriting phase. I will do this by encouraging students to brainstorm, not by forcing everyone to use the same brainstorming technique. This change is supported by research and helps students focus their writing. So, an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to emphasize the benefits of brainstorming.

ML

Writing instruction gives people greater ability to communicate their ideas and thoughts, which in turn enriches their interactions with the world and the people in it.

In addition, writing helps us become better acquainted with our own ideas and beliefs, and in turn ourselves. The recursiveness of the writing process allows us to explore ideas we encounter and to re-evaluate ideas or beliefs we thought were strongly held or simply those we have held onto for a long time. Engaging in writing about our ideas allows us to increase the rigor of our thinking with and about those ideas under consideration, ultimately leading us to a more critical and thorough examination of and engagement with our own ideas and beliefs. Then, through sharing our ideas with others, we are able to consider the ideas and beliefs presented by others in light of our own, deepening the interaction between not just the ideas and beliefs of both parties, but also between both parties as people.

The more you read, the better you write. In order to emphasize the importance of writing in my classroom, I will use strong model texts to demonstrate to students what writing can look like—what they can do, rather than what they can not do. I will also implement daily, consistent writing in my classroom by requiring my students to have a dedicated writing notebook that they will always have with them. With the hopes of creating a welcoming writing environment, I will have the students share what they have written often. Sharing your writing can be vulnerable, so I will establish and reiterate expectations of respect and kindness. As a class, we will understand the purpose of constructive feedback, and why specific, targeted feedback is beneficial. I will tailor our writing prompts and model texts to student interests and to topics we are covering in class. Although providing detailed feedback can be time consuming, I will provide constructive feedback to my students and go over it with them to ensure they understand. I will also model the revision process for them and teach the skills students need—and likely do not have yet!—to edit independently. Although grammar is incredibly important in effective writing, I will try my best to prioritize content based feedback rather than only correcting grammatical errors. I want my students to feel more confident in their writing, not feel like they’re about to do something wrong. This change is supported by my school’s initiative to incorporate daily writing into our instruction, and it helps students by encouraging their creativity and teaching them how to communicate in many different ways. So an important change I want to make in my writing instruction is to encourage daily, consistent writing.

Writing is an art that allows you not only to communicate with others, but a chance to communicate with yourself in a structured way. It is a metacognitive process that we can use to reflect on, and express, our beliefs about a topic. Sometimes the process reveals a new way of thinking. Maybe you didn’t actually believe what you thought you believed when you started writing. Maybe the reflective nature of the process allowed you to learn about your own values. The process of thinking about writing isn't just about creating a neat finished product, but reflecting on what you really believe. It can cause a lot of internal strife and confusion and reexamination of your own beliefs and that's a good thing — it means that you’re giving your brain a chance to work through tough ideas.

Allowing your students access to these metacognitive processes will enable them to think critically about their own long-held beliefs. In order to affect this change, I want to allow more creative opportunities for students to write in their unique voice (I say as I fill in the provided template). I will do this by increasing the amount of meaningful exposures students have to model texts and opportunities to write and express themselves creatively. Not by teaching a rigid, black and white writing process. So an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to encourage students to reflect on the relevance and role of writing in their lives.

Therefore these important messages must be communicated in a way that can be understood. Writing should also be powerful since it is an avenue for creativity and entertainment. In addition, writing is a way to not only express your views but a way to dive into your thoughts and learn more about your thinking. Hence, writing is a constantly growing and developing skill that is your message to the world and it needs to be understood and impactful!

Since writing instruction is important, every classroom and subject area teacher should be providing this instruction to their students. An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to use text as a support for writing. I will do this by using writing recommendation 2’s instructions for selecting a text and the NCSCOS standards.

Not by guessing and randomly choosing a text.

This change is supported by Writing Recommendation 2 and helps students mimic examples of good writing that target specific elements. Being able to effectively communicate in multiple ways is a real world need. When students grow into adults, even the texts and emails they send are considered a part of the writing genre. Having a teacher that will explicitly teach and breakdown writing instruction piece by piece is a must. This will help provide a platform to set up success in adulthood and throughout life.

Writing instruction is crucial because it guides students in how to put their thoughts onto paper. Students do not naturally know how to make their cognitive thoughts into clear and complete writing pieces. When asked to put pencil to paper, this task can be overwhelming to them. But by giving students clear direction in chunks and stages, students can feel successful and supported. Writing instruction can look different at various grade levels but cannot stop at just the lower elementary level of handwriting and sentence structure. Creating space for students to understand how to compose a writing piece with different elements and goals allows students to learn the complexity of writing and gives them a diverse toolkit of writing strategies and styles. Students may naturally tend toward one type of writing style, but writing instruction gives them access to other writing styles. We can convey, as educators, the complexity of writing through modeling and examples. We can vary the degree to which we allow students access to these by presenting examples at the beginning, middle or end of a writing assignment. Sometimes our goal is to allow students time to express their thoughts and “free write” without very specific prompts. This type of writing and instruction allows students a “low stakes” way to practice crafting a writing piece. Other times we can stretch a student to use a specific model or form of writing in order to expand upon their natural mode of writing. In all, our goal is to provide students with the skill to communicate to the world what they know, and feel.

Because there is great value in writing instruction within the classroom, I plan to utilize mentor tests to strengthen my personal writing instruction. An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is using well-prepared example texts to demonstrate specific writing styles or features.

I will do this by aligning my school’s current curriculum with writing structures that need to be taught. Not by focusing on all writing components at one time and therefore overwhelming my students. This change is supported by scaffolding and teacher modeling as well as finding high quality texts and helps students to see what the end goal could look like. It allows students to reference a starting point. So, an important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is using well-prepared example texts to demonstrate specific writing styles and features.

Writing is important because it is a life skill students must have in order to communicate effectively. Students must learn to create complete thoughts that are meaningful to themselves and others. Writing gives students an opportunity to ponder and organize their own thinking, which might include analyzing and/or incorporating their feelings, emotions, opinions, and experiences. Writing instruction can also provide students with opportunities to research, paraphrase, summarize, synthesize, etc. Taking thoughts from the mind to the paper/screen in an organized format is a difficult skill that must be taught systematically and consistently in order to encourage automaticity. When I think about effective writing instruction, I think about the need for a systematic process that encompasses all content areas.

Writing is important for several reasons but primarily because it allows for sharing of thoughts, feelings, and ideas with others. For instance, through writing we understand the lived experiences of others and discover new ways of being. Writing also provides an opportunity for many people to share thoughts and feelings that they often do not have the words to verbally express. Since writing allows for sharing, we can see the blue skies of the beach while in a desert or feel the rays of sunshine while experiencing a tropical depression. Similar to other arts, writing creates a venue for our creative thoughts and new creations to take new forms.

In order to provide these same experiences for my students I need to alter how I currently address writing in my classroom.

Writing instruction is important as it front loads students to learn to convey messages across multiple platforms. When the message is conveyed via writing, others know the thought processes of the one who is writing. When writing instruction is not provided systematically students lack in technique that allows for strong writing skills from one grade level to the next grade level. The ultimate goal is for students to convey a message to others that project ideas or thoughts, affirm/confirm, or challenge depending on the expectation of the task. The more the writer knows the commands, techniques, structure and skills of a writer the better they become as writers. Writing isn’t a one day task. As an educator, writing should be implemented daily across disciplines. Also various platforms can be used when students are writing. As a 21st Century learner, students shouldn’t be limited to paper and pencil only. However, paper and pencil can be an important mode of expressive language for all students. Think about it this way…. your signature is writing. People know you by that signature. If you do not know how to expres your writing in this one simple mode, then what is really writing for you? Everyone needs to know how to do that very thing. 🙂

The important thing about writing is it front loads students to learn to convey messages across multiple platforms

It’s like a a message in a bottle.

You convey your thinking visually to others.

But it isn’t simple.

It projects ideas, thoughts, affirm/confirm and challenges

challenge depending on the expectation of the task.

But the important thing about writing is it front loads students to learn to convey messages across multiple platforms

An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is incorporating the use of purposeful mentor text.

I will do this by spiraling the use of the IRA text currently/previously used during read alouds before the LETRS lesson.

Not by non-researched based activities created by for the sake of covering the writing block before specials. Writing instruction gives us an opportunity to add and take away from those thoughts as needed and adapt our products.

When we teach writing to our students, it allows us to put into practice the processes of decoding and encoding because as we know practice makes permanent.

Writing instruction is critical because it teaches individuals how to take information or creative thinking and lay those words out on paper in a structural way that leads to understanding and/or excitement, curiosity, and joy. Teaching writing is valuable in all work forces and can help people establish better reading and speaking skills. Writing allows people to communicate information that may be specific for an institution, purpose, or audience. Writing across curricula may tap into students who find that they have a niche for that style of writing or that writing in a certain course helps them learn the information better. Teaching writing will encourage people to think deeper and more specifically and allow them to hone in on what they really want to say, eliminating overused adverbs, for instance, and other words that are unnecessary or interfere with comprehension.

Because writing is a process, modeling and collaboration are valuable. An important change that I want to make in my writing instruction is to be clear about the purpose and audience and allow students to encourage, edit, and support each other.

I will do this by modeling an example where we focus on the purpose and audience not by just assigning something and jumping right in.

This change is supported by modeling, practice, and collaboration and helps students learn how to edit their own work to prepare for a final product.
