Paul Strand was born in 1890 and has been called the most commanding talent in the history of American Photography. He was first given a camera by his father in 1907, when he went to college he was influenced by his teacher, Lewis Hine.

By 1916, He was influenced by modern painting and sculpture and started to attempt artistic photography. He did not use manipulation techniques. His use of shapes, space and patterns stood out and defined his style of work.

Paul used photography to capture life in an artistic view, only using the things that happened around him and only natural occuring shapes and patterns.

I really enjoy his work because it can enlighten us to the things hiding around us in plain sight, and makes you start to notice shapes and spaces all around us.

I like this photo because of the interesting lines created by the shadow of the railing. The zigzag-ing shadow is quite satisfying.

You can also tell that the photo is being taken at an angle and not straight on.

Paul takes all his photos in Black and White, this compliments the photo well and removes the focus from the objects and makes you focus on the shadows and lines formed.

I like this image, the use of the reflection from the frosted window to take the photo. This typology works as i used the same compostion style for all of the subjects. The black and white complements the work and maintains simularity between them. Whilst using a flash, there is a quickest possible shutter speed that can be used. When you increase the shutter speed, what can happen is that part of your photo can be black because it is out of sync with the flash.

In this Photo by Luisa Dorr from "The Self Promenade" Project from around 2014, we can see 2 different kids taking photos of the landscape around them. There is a city in the background and also a river. One of them is taking a selfie with the city behind them, whilst the other is just taking a photo of the city.

This photo is taken a fair distance from the 2 boys, they are both being kept in the frame of the photo. The only light being used in this photo is the natural light from the sun. This photographer uses a mobile phone camera to take photos instead of an SLR camera.

The point of this work is to show the way that people act when going to a area of significance/ tourist attractions. Some people would rather take a photo of themselves at the attraction rather than taking a photo of the attraction, this photo shows that dynamic between the 2 boys. 1 is taking a photo of themselves and the other is taking a photo of just the landscape. This body of work was taken in Hong Kong, where people who live in mainland china come over to "Show off" the fact they've travelled to somewhere many may've not gone before.

In this photo we can see a portrait of a nurse in distress. She has her hands up to her mouth and is clutching them. Her mouth is also open a little bit, which could show that she's being stunned or shocked by something in front of her.

This photo is a promotional photo for the TV series "Chernobyl" that revolves around the tragedy of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The goal of the photo is to create an emotional response and want the person viewing the promotional image to watch the show. The photographer, Nadav Kander's work uses lighting and colour to create feelings for the person viewing the image. He uses light to make the photo feel uncomfortable, which the lighting in this photo takes advantage of.
