I want you to think about the power of poetry.  Poetry teaches us how to strengthen word choice, as the writer has to use a very conservative amount of words to express ideas.  Also, poetry is a great method for teaching grammar.  Finding prepositional phrases, adjectives, adverbs, and even subjects and verbs can be less daunting in a short line of poetry.  


I am sharing some of my favorite writing activities for kids of all ages.  I always start poetry by giving students what I secretly call formulaic poems.   Although kids are given a type of sentence starter, you can teach them that writing is like building or creating a piece of art.  They can arrange the lines any way they want!


Try your hand at one of these poems.  You can be creative.  If you have read a picture book, chapter book, or even beach read lately, write from the perspective of the character.  Or, just write about yourself or a friend.  Just HAVE FUN.
