Summary

Intelligence and Leadership, are few of the many qualities a hero can hold. It happens that Odysseus holds almost all of them. For example in the cyclops episode Odysseus showed bravery, leadership, intelligence, and hospitality. I drew it from the coals and my four fellows gave me a hand, lugging it near the Cyclops as more than natural force nerved them; straightforward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye," (Homer 329-333). He was the only one willing to take down the evil cyclops and intelligent enough to find a way too. He saved his men from getting eaten and saved himself. Even in the Sirens he had intelligence "Therefore you are to tie me up, tight as a splint,
erect along the mast, lashed to the mast,
and if I shout and beg to be untied,
take more turns of the rope to muffle me." (Homer 694-698). Odysseus has showed so much hospitality even thought the hardships he's been through. "A wineskin full I brought along, and victuals in a bag,
for in my bones I knew some towering brute would be upon us soon—all outward power,
a wild man, ignorant of civility."(Homer 152-156)

We have also seen perseverance."you much think hard if you conjure up the fighting strength to take us through" (Homer 1106-1107)
He has struggled on this journey home but he finally made it.

Helios is angry and says "‘O Father Zeus and gods in bliss forever, punish Odysseus’ men! Restitution or penalty they shall pay— and pay in full—or I go down forever to light the dead men in the underworld.’" (Homer 907 to 914). Odysseus' men violate the greek value of honor by killing Helios' cows. "But if he flares up over his heifers lost, wishing our ship destroyed, and if the gods make cause with him, why, then I say: Better open your lungs to a big sea once for all than waste to skin and bones on a lonely island!"(Homer).
