The other characters involved in these poems include the daughters cousins who have been in her place and made it through there journey. The roles of the cousins help us to understand that the journey can be achieved. They help us understand that in the daughters situation there will be many dangers and obstacles along the way. They help us understand how strong the mom is and how much she goes through by having to see her daughter leave, even though it for a better life.

The significance of the bandana

The different colored bandanas are significant because its they way the daughter can get across the border, and if she were to go with any color besides yellow she wouldn't make it across the border. These details help us understand the daughter is tough situation where she has to go to the right coyotes to make it across her journey safely. In her journey trying to get to her destination she can come into many dangers like getting raped from a man. This situation reveals that she has no safety and all she has is herself who can protect her.

Beginning of the poem

The poems start off as their own perspective. In the poem "On Leaving" it starts off with the daughter preparing for her journey by running around the village with her dog, testing her speed and endurance. In the poem " On Staying Behind" it starts with the mothers perspective watching her daughter running through the village. This is important because we are able to understand the perspective from each character. Not only are the feelings and emotions revealed to us but one's qualities and assets are shown. The daughters preparing for her journey which shows her determination to wanting to make it in her journey. It also shows how strong the mother is watching her daughter chasing her dreams and leaving her for a better life.

Significance of each poem

In the poem "On Leaving" the hypothetical scenario is significant because it helps us understand the knowledge the daughter carries and the risks she's willing to take at a young age. This poem reveals to us that she is aware of rape and this is one of the dangers she may have to face on the journey. We become very well aware of her training as it is expressed in the beginning of the poem and understand that she will do what she can for survival on the journey.
In the poem "On Staying Behind" the mother includes the events she experienced that day where as the daughter expresses a hypothetical scenario. This is important because in the Mother's experience, overall she utilizes information relating to low food storage and hunger present in the village which supports the reason as to why the daughter must not stay.

Mother's Perspective

I believe the mother's perspective comes after the daughter's perspective to show that there's always two sides to a story. It shows a side of emigrating/immigrating that people never tell the side of. It shows why the daughter is taking this journey and why its important to her. It tells the a story of what parents or a family members go through with being in a dying village with no food left while their loved one crosses the border for a better life and future. This poem shows how much the people who stay behind sacrifice for the people they love to have a better future. It reveals their anxiety, their fear, and the suspense from waiting and praying that you child or niece will be okay.

Garcia's poem

Garcia seems to be saying through her poems that emigrants/ immigrants are very strong willed people. Garcia is explaining what builds up to a person immigrating/ emigrating and reveals the exigence to what causes a person to need to move to a different country for a better life. Garcia seems to be saying that with a the dangers of the daughters journey like, going to the wrong smuggler, getting snatched by a man, and not being able to finish her journey, that immigrants/ emigrants are very determined people who know what they want.

Garcia presents this message by writing two poems with different point of views. On the first set of stanzas we are giving the daughter;s entire perspective on the journey which includes her training and preparing for it. In the second poem each stanza contains the viewpoint of the mother on the whole situation of her daughter leaving. Their emotional state is then revealed to us in the lines as we read through the poems. Garcia provides descriptive detail throughout both poems from mentioning colors to describing the setting, creating imagery.
