I wanted to take key elements of Pop Art such as the famous usage of polka dots and the 4 main colors red, blue, yellow he used in all his artworks to add effect to his signicture background explotions, and that lighter skin tone color for the face. I used these techniques for inspiration to apply them to my own piece of art work.

For the character of the portrait, I wanted to use Ron Burgandy as his character is based in the 60s and 70s during Pop Art's prime era. And is also a well-known icon today.

I also used inspiration from the Tv show archer (artist- Chad Hurd) as I admired the way in which the characters faces where more fine lined and had suttle detail that gave there faces a different but distinguishable feature. I combined both the characters features and the art styles Roy lichtenstien used to give his art work that 50s printed effect and didn't place to much detail in the coloring as I wanted it to be similar to the comic books that Roy Lichtenstien based his own work on.
</sup>

Cover for Art Critique

I chose this artwork because it really captured my attention when I saw it at first. This because it intrigued my thoughts when thinking about the message the work and the artist where trying to give, including its colors, the black and white, the contrast between them, and finally, why the shape of the way the background was painted. During this evaluation, I want to be able to clear those thoughts.

Description
The title of this artwork is “In Depth” and it’s artist is 17 year old Emma Carazo, which is a Costarrican Student in Pan-American School. The artwork was created during the months of August, September and October of 2021, in the school she attends to. In the artwork it is evidenced how she uses pencil materials for the drawing and then painting for the background. She uses lines in the clothes of the girl to give a real texture of what a jeans and uniform shirt looks like, also giving shades and folds to both. She uses a circular way pattern of painting the background, as well as the tone of the blue, which gradiently becomes darker towards the middle, this is done to give emphasis to the girl. Finally, really contrasting the colored background with the pencil drawn black and white piece. Concluding, this is clearly not an abstract piece of work, we can identify a girl sitting with her head between both knees, maybe crying or even laughing.

Analysis
Emphasis is one of the clearest principles of design in this artwork because the whole background is given a circular shape rounding the central and principal figure to draw the attention to it. The similarities in the artwork are the shaping of the lines and texture of the background. It is very similar everywhere around the central object, including the color and tone. There is only one character but it could be having some emotions that the viewer can see, for example, anger, she could be screaming, happiness, she could be laughing, maybe embarrassed, and trying to hide herself, or she could be sad and be crying.

Interpretation
This artwork makes me feel sorry and sad for the girl. This because me and maybe the majority of people seeing this can relate to a moment in their lives where they were angry, sad, or alone, and we just wanted to be alone for awhile, also in depth of our own thoughts and feelings. For this artwork I would describe it with the words: Lonely, thoughtful, sad. It can also relate to a teenager’s life, where those are the years they experience the most emotions and a lot of times explode in and with them.

Evaluation

I strongly believe that the artwork is a complete success. This because it gives a clear message to the viewer through its composition and emphasis, which is perfect. It can be compared to other artworks that try to give emphasis as the one on the bottom right. We can see how both are rounded by other objects but manage to stand out because of different techniques, for example, contrasting or structure. I think this is an original artwork because the girl in the drawing is actually the artist, so it could never be stolen. Also the idea, she could not steal it because she is trying to represent her own emotions.

I chose this artwork because it felt joyful and familiar. I believe that the artist conveyed lots of cheerful feelings and expressed the heartfelt familiarity of childhood.

The artist that created this piece is Miranda Brenes. It was developed through september and October of 2021 at Pan-American School in Costa Rica. Through the piece, the use of light is something that is highlighted. It is used to create a light tone and a cheerful mood. This is also greatly achieved by the use of color, considering the artist opted for pastel tones and light shades.

The painting shows chicken and waffles. Chicken and waffles is an American dish, which originated in Harlem during the 1930s. It was created with an underpainting technique, by using blue tonalities and then painted over with acrylic paint.

The work is very balanced throughout the canvas. It is completely centered, as Wayne Thiebaud usually organizes his paintings. There is some movement across the fried chicken which is achieved by using different tones and highlights. There is definitely an emphasis on the butter in the center of the work, this is mainly because of its location on the canvas. As for the shapes defined on the waffles, there is lots of repetition in the dark blue shadows.

The artists definitely worked towards creating a relationship between both aspects of the dish, by using similar tones for both of them and highlighting their similarities.

The work is very satisfying and charming, I would say this is mainly due to the pastel tones used, since they create a cool feeling. It reminds me of childhood and the joy of trying new things.

The work is inspired by Wayne Thiebaud, an American pop-artist who focuses on creating images of desserts. It definitely has the qualities of a stereotypical pop art work, the simple colors and the shadows surrounding the food. I think that if you were to observe this painting from the eyes of an artist who chooses to link pop art to artists like Andy Warhol or Keith Haring, the interpretation would be different, since their style of this artform is very bold and 2D, something that is very contrasting to this artist’s style.

I would say this artwork is a huge success. The artist experimented with various techniques that allowed her to achieve a satisfying and accurate result. Compared to Thiebaud’s paintings, there are certain similarities, yet the artist chose a meal that isn’t commonly represented and that made it original and true to their personality as an artist.

I believe that if you were to judge this painting, it would be wise to focus on Pop Art qualities that aren’t stereotypical to famous artists. Also pay attention to the creation process in order to understand the artist’s intentions.

This artwork is about the simple joys of life and how we tend to overlook it by sinking into our duties. In this case, it brings the subject of food, which is a need for survival and something that brings some form of contentment. The emphasis is heavily implied on the waffle as it takes up most of the space in the frame. As well, there aren’t any other elements that don’t revolve around it.

Elements of Art

The color scheme used consists of violet and purple for the background and the inside of the waffle. However, for the details in the waffle, she used various shades of orange, yellow, and dark red to create texture. Thus it can be said that the artists used a complementary color scheme.

In the artwork, there are some geometric and organic shapes such as:

Rectangles

For the inside of the waffle

Abstract shapes

For the ice cream? It's above the waffle and differentiates that it's a separate detail on top of the waffle.

Finally the artist uses an art technique called Impasto, which consists of using various thick layers of paint to create tactile texture.

Interpretation:

The artwork made me feel hungry as the main component of this piece is the waffle. I would describe this piece simply because there isn’t much else to think about except the food. Moreover, because of flashy colors and focus on texture, I consider the artwork striking when first looking at it.

This artwork relates to the recurrent theme of finding feelings of “happiness.” In society, everything is involved with looking for the way to be good enough, and often, people relate that with having money, a successful career, good looks, etc. However, in this search for perfection, we overlook the simple things in life that make us happy. Therefore, this artwork refers to a social behavior humans tend to do daily, forgetting the exciting elements of life itself.

Evaluation:

I think the artwork is a massive success regarding the artist’s intention as I can understand where her thought process came from seeing the joy in the simplest forms. It reminded me of how I subconsciously feel feelings f happiness and comfort when eating a dish or dessert that tastes and looks good. Whether this artwork is original is controversial as the artist recreated an image of a waffle she photographed. Moreover, the shape, form, and details were inspired by something that already exists, and she used more of her visual and tracing skills to do this artwork. On the other hand, the originality fluctuates from the choice of color schemes and her idea of the intention. The meaning is indirectly implied as not everyone firsthand would associate happiness with food, showing how a simple piece can express a deeper meaning than most expected.

I decided to review this artwork because it was the only one done with spray paint. It is very interesting how he did the shapes with stencil representing the four figures shown below. I would like to analyse in depth more about the artwork now that each figure represents something about the author’s life.

The title of the artwork is “Life in the Past” made by Fabrizzio Costa. This artwork was created in the Pan-American-School art class and it was made around the September month of 2021. Some of the elements in this work are the lines separating each square, by this you can see how the author was inspired by some of the Andy Warhol artworks. Some of the technical qualities is the spray paint used with the stencil technique. With this technique it is clear that he wanted to show the pop art style in the work. This artwork is about the author’s life in the past. I can guess the is meaning to the Covid-19 quarantine now that he is showing elements essential to his life; like the mask, phone, headphone’s (Referring to music) and a controller (referring to videogames) I like the elements he chose to show now that I also needed the four of the things in the quarantine.
This work is constructed in four squares separated by the lines of each square’s color. Each square has a different base color beneath the stencil image. The similarities of the work is the symmetry of the squares now that each one measures about the same. Also, you can see how each of the shapes are placed in the center of each square and they are about the same size. I will give some importance to the top right square which is the one of the phone now that it is the only one which the paint passes through the line of the own square. I don’t know if the author did this on purpose to show more importance the the phone over to the controller. The subject of the work is about the essential elements in the covid quarantine. The relationship between them is that these were essential elements the author needed every day.

In my opinion, the author uses a happiness mood as an expressive quality in the work because each of the objects in the work makes you feel more happy and entertained in your everyday life. This work reminds me of my covid quarantine because so as the author these four elements were essential for my everyday life to make me happier. This work ideas relate to the pandemic event in the world because I am sure a lot of people at least used and needed one element of this artwork in their quarantine to feel happier and more entertained.

The qualities of the work like happiness, entertainment and relation makes me feel it is a success because I think the author successfully showed the meaning of the artwork which was showing essential elements in the covid quarantine. I can compare this work with some of the Andy Warhol art pieces now that it is about the same style of pop art. In my opinion Fabrizzio did a really good job because he showed his purpose very clear. The criteria C of Communication and intention is the one I could list for other to judge this work now that I think the strongest criteria in this artwork was the C. This work is very original in the part of the meaning and intention because I haven’t seen quarantine related artworks. It is not very original in the part of making the four squares and the colors because a lot of pop art artworks are very similar. But overall I feel it is very original compared to other artworks I have seen.

I decided to review this painting because I find it very captivating how much attention the piece receives upon the viewers, and the ways in which it does so. I'm really interested in the form by which this woman expresses herself and her personality solely through her looks and style.

This artwork is titled “Polka Dot Lady”, and the artist of it is Ximena Rubi. The painting was created in Pan-American School Costa Rica on October 2021. Some of the most important and significant elements found in this artwork are the circles in the background which act as the polka dots, the line movement of the hair, the line of her face shape, and most importantly, the line movement found in her shirt. It was created on a canvas, and the materials used in it where acrylic paint, for the subject matter and background, and cutouts of cardboard paper for the red circles in the back.

This piece of work counts with various different similarities within its own, the most outstanding and noticeable ones being the repetition of shapes and lines. In the shirt and collar of this woman, there are many red lines that are being repeated in order to create a 60s fashion look on her clothing. The main emphasis of this work is the womans face, and this emphasis is created because her skin is the only part of the painting that doesn't include a pattern or bright color, which is precisely what makes it stand out from all the matter.

I find that this work shows qualities of confidence because of the woman's facial expression, fun because of the interactive background and lines on the shirt, entertaining because of all the colors and symphonies of movement, and overall bold and empowering. The qualities of the work that make me feel like its a success are the overall symphony and correlation each piece has with each other despite being so contrasting in color and shape, as well as the feeling and emotions of empowerment this piece provokes. I believe that the emotions an artwork provokes on someone is one of the biggest deciding factors as to whether it's successful or not, so to me this really was.

I think that this is a very original piece of work because personally, I haven't seen anything artwork similar to this one, or at least I haven't seen a piece of art that conveys me the same feelings that this artwork conveys me. I think part of what makes it so original are all of the colors and lines and patterns seen in it. To me, the most cool piece of this work are the glasses and shirt, which I believe adds a lot to that value and specialness.

I chose this artwork because it looked creative and fun. Since I saw it it intrigued my thoughts, I felt a lot of different feelings, one of them remembering part of my childhood when i eated pancakes all the mornings. Miranda Brenes is the awesome artist that created this artwork. It was cretated in September and October, 2021 in Pan-American School, Costa Rica. The use of pastel colors and colors that bring the attention are applied in a way it calls peoples attention.

The painting shows a chicken a waffles, an american dich that originated in Harlemduring the 1930s. Created with a tonalities, specially blue tonalities and then the artist painted over everything with acrylic paint.

One of the most important factors Wayne Thiebaud had is that he centered his paintings very well and Brenes did it in a ery organized and clean way. Thanks to the highlights and the tone the artist used, the chicken has some movement. The emphasis is clearly pointed at the butter because it occupies the center of the canvas.

By using different tones for both of them (chicken and waffles) we can differentiate very well the dish and also by the different type of tones she used to make the painting unique.

This artwork that Brenes did as an artist reminded me of my childhood where I use to ask for waffles every morning as breakfast and even sometimes as dinner. It is very orgaizzed so it makes the dish more delicious, and it makes me want to taste that dish.

Wayne Thiebaud is the responsable for giving Brenes the inspiration of creating this artwork. Thiebaud is an American pop artist that focuses on creating desserts images. This artwork makes me feel it was a success because Brenes used the right technique and maked others understand who she was getting the inspirations from without even telling the name of the artist. I think her work is completely original and unique because she got the inspiration but not the idea and I personally think getting creative and making something is the most difficult part of the work.

I chose this artwork because it has a variety of elements for me to analyze and I look forward to looking into this work with more detail to really understand why it has caught my eye. I also worked closely to the artist, therefore I am particularly interested in it and in reviewing her final results from a more critical perspective.

The title is “ Footwear diversity” and the artist is Emma Osante. The work has created throughout the months of september and october in Pan-American School. It has the following elements: Lines outline the different shapes that compose the shoes and their silhouettes. The laces around surrounding these elements create movement. Light is not really present as there are no shadows nor highlights. There are 6 vibrant colors, including a warm yellow, red, black, a mint green tone and violet. Texture is minimal and smooth, it does not contain detailed textures. The materials are acrylic paints on a canvas. The artist used acrylic paint , brushes and a canvas to create the work. The artwork is inspired by Keith Haring’s style, and its intention is to communicate diversity through shoes, to represent differences among people and different styles through something as common as shoes. It uses popular shoe brands that are recognizable as soon as you look at the painting, symbolizing pop culture. According to the artist it is also a reference to social classes. The images are very recognizable, even the shoe brand is easy to recognize, such as the Crocs, Vans, Dr Martens, Converse and Nike. The work is mainly constructed through elements such as line, shape and color. There are similarities and repetition such as in the repetition of laces throughout the canvas. The point of emphasis is the black and red heel, placed at the bottom center and using different colors from the rest of the shoes which makes it stand out. The work has no characters nor human figures.

The work has various expressive qualities. It is thought provoking because it makes you reflect on the meaning of the shoes and their placement. It is also stimulating and dynamic because it has a wide variety of popular culture imagery, specifically modern fashion imagery. It also has an activism tone to it considering the socioeconomic meaning it has. I do relate to the work because in it I recognize specific shoes that I own and wear on a daily basis. It relates to other ideas and events in the world because the shoes are known at a global level and it represents an idea that encompasses a global issue. The title does affect my interpretation of the work because the word diversity made me think of general diversity that is represented by shoes, which in my interpretation can symbolize social status. The cultural context has an impact as well because it is mostly based on western culture, since these are shoes mostly used and recognized in America.

I have decided to choose this artwork called “Polka Dot Lady” made by Ximena Rubi, a 17 year old girl from Costa Rica. I chose this piece since it caught my attention the second I saw it. The artist definitely used many different skills and techniques that made the piece very visually attractive, making this a great work to analyze and critique. To add, I also liked how she made a resemblance with the artist that inspired her named Yayoi Kusama’s, and how she was able to implement her unique techniques while at the same time combining some elements from the 60’s fashion.

The title of this artwork is “The Polka Dot Lady”, and it was created by Ximena Rubi in Pan-American School during the months of september and october in 2021. This piece contains various art elements such as the lines in her shirt which also creates a texture effect, the polka dots in the background and the glasses, which is what makes her a polka dot lady. Also, all the different tones, and value added to the woman herself are crucial elements and we can observe a big contrast with the colors she chose (red, yellow, blue, black, white, and beige), which is a very important detail in the pop art movement. Ximena used different materials in the making of this piece. She used acrylic paint on the woman and the background, and she also used circular cardboard cut-outs for the red dots. To add, there are some recognizable images in this work, for instance we can definitely see a resemblance of the artist that inspired her named Yayoi Kusama and we can also spot some qualities of 60’s fashion, just like the glasses and the shirt.

This work has many elements to analyze, starting off with the composition of the subject, which is clearly placed in the center, meaning that the artist was trying to make it the emphasis of the piece. There are also some similarities throughout the whole work, specifically all the repetition of circles in the background and the glasses, and the line pattern on the shirt. As mentioned before, the lady is supposed to be the emphasis of the whole piece and we can infer this according to the position in the canvas. The background polka dots isn’t the emphasis of this work but it definitely gives value to the whole composition. It creates a pattern that balances the empty space of the background with the whole work and has a relation with the patterns on the glasses, while at the same time creating a contrast with the other shapes in the work. Also, the artist she was inspired by is Yayoi Kusama, which uses a lot of polka dots in her works, which makes us see how Ximena implemented such techniques in her own unique style.

This piece contains many expressive qualities within its own that may provoke certain emotions to the viewer. This work can be interpreted in many ways, first of all it gives fun and happy vibes, probably because of the bright colors used and all the joyful patterns. It also creates an empowering atmosphere in result of some physical features of the lady, specially her red lips, the glasses, and her shirt. Overall, this piece can be considered an uplifting work. This work has a lot of interrelations with different ideas and events in the world, specially with the fashion industry due to all the eye-catching clothing accessories the woman has. The use of materials, colors, techniques, and ideas also makes a reference to pop culture which relates well with the art movement of pop art.

There are many qualities from this work that makes me feel it was a success. First off, all the contrast between each pattern used and the different tones of colors makes it really eye catching. When you see this artwork you can immediately infer that it has a relation with the pop art art movement, while at the same time expressing some 60’s fashion statements just like the artist wanted to. This work is really unique and I really like how well it turned out, specially the way she decided to implement Yayoi Kusama’s techniques into it and the composition of every element combines really well with each other. Even though I have seen similar ideas, I believe this artwork is 100% original, and I can say this with certainty because I can clearly see how the artist combined her own ideas with Yayoi Kusama’s style and how she was able to make it into a piece that had her own interpretation. Overall, I think this artwork, “Polka Dot Lady”, is a high quality piece that has a great potential in the art industry.

It's intended to remind the viewer of the times in which they wouldn't take life too seriously and would view everything through eyes of joy. This is represented through the food, which is a very interesting and cheerful combination that is most prone to be eaten and enjoyed by children who still love the surprise elements of life.

I like this artwork because it has a simple and understandable meaning. Personally I think that he did a really good job by being inspired in Roy Lichtenstein art, also his artwork has an enriching representation of pop art. Also I am a big fan of Marvel movies and comics, so this painting really captured my attention.

The title of this artwork is Heroes of the Multiverse and the artist is Daniel Paniza, this artwork was created on Pan-American school and it was done on October 1st. The artwork is divided into quadrants and each has a different superhero, he used primary and secondary colors, he also simplified the details on the superheroes. The materials he used was acrylic paint and a black sharpie marker. From the first glance you can see that these are the main Marvel superheroes

I like that since Roy Lichtenstein art is like a comic book he used marvel, although if he added dots and made the artwork have more emotions like Roy Lichtenstein art, but since this is just an inspired art I would say it is a success. I think that it is original, and it looks like he used some of Andy Warhol repetition technique
