I agree with the central theme of international mindedness as defined by IB that it is people who "recognize our common humanity shared guardianship of the planet"

A global citizen to me is someone who seeks to learn about the needs, issues, cultures, perspectives of different groups of people and places. It is someone who understands that their actions in their local place affect other places and people. It is someone who feels a responsibility to service and contribution to the planet as a whole, not just themselves and their immediate circle.

3. How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

Our schools are preparing our students for global citizenship by using the IB program which in itself has an international mindedness focus, international and outside assessment, and the idea that students all over the world are focusing on the same biology topics (ex. climate change) and that there are international consequences and impacts and that it takes us coming together to form organizations where we must listen to each other and come up with global solutions.

4. What are the ways in which texts, topics, or ideas in your classroom have benefited from contributions from other communities, cultures, and nationalities?

Many of the texts we use in class are from peer-reviewed journals that have been published across the world. We look at articles from different locations as well to see local issues - ex. rising temperatures in the mediterranean, when studying the effects of climate change.
We need voices from other communities, cultures and nationalities in order to work together on issues that affect all of us.

5. How can you help your students understand the importance of international understanding as it relates to your course?

I am challenged to get our students to not only interact with internationally-written texts and topics, but to interact with people from other countries. I think hearing from other students about the topics they are learning in class from a different perspective is engaging and allows them to develop other areas of the whole person as defined in the IB learner profile.

6. What activities have you carried out in your class that have knowingly or unknowingly highlighted or celebrated international-mindedness?

Some activities that have highlighted international-mindedness so far is looking at our garbage issue in North America and seeing the impacts in other parts of the world - Hawaii, oceanic gyres, temperature changes in the Mediterranean, melting of ice caps in the arctic, etc.
Students are now more concerned about packaging, plastics, garbage sorting, amount of waste, as they see the larger ramifications and consequences of our conveniences
