Write a 'postcard' from any street in Hong Kong to tell me about the quality of everyday life (or lack of it) that you might experience there, particularly in relation to issues of public health.

Through the streets of Central, behind all the glitz and glamour, there is part it where cockroaches could be found on the side of the streets. Due to the lack of monitoring of the daily operations of temporary stalls and hawkers on the side of the street, unnecessary food wastes and garbage could be disposed anywhere instead of bin for their convenience. Exacerbating the hygiene of the streets. Furthermore, scaffolding everywhere above the pedestrian area poses threats to the general public in case there’s any sign instability of it. Consequently, the quality of everyday life on these streets are lacking.

Dense buildings and packed vehicles have resulted in poor air quality in Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s air pollution mainly contributed by vehicles, power plants etc. Furthermore, dense buildings in Hong Kong reduce the wind speed, the pollutants are trapped and not ventilated. Since the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere in Hong Kong is gradually increasing in the past decades, the risk of getting different respiratory problems like irritations of throat and nose, coughing etc has also increased.

this picture shown people in central are all wearing masks because Hong Kong has a mask policy that requires Hong Kong citizens to wear face masks in all public spaces.The mask mandate will be the last COVID rule the government hopes to lift between March. and April. However, i believe the majority of hk people will still keep wearing mask since they highly concern about public health and sanitary.

Dear Mathew Pryor,

I wanted to send you a postcard from one of my favorite streets in Hong Kong - Hennessy Road. This street is bustling with activity and a mix of cultures, but there is a dark side of this vibrant street.

The public health issues in the area are concerning, with inadequate proper sanitation and uncleanliness leading to an elevated risk of infections and illnesses. The air quality is poor due to the traffic, and the narrow streets and inadequate housing can lead to overcrowding and a lack of privacy.

The living conditions can also be dangerous, especially for the most vulnerable. People here live in fear of crime and violence, and there are many victims of exploitation and abuse.

Despite these challenges, the people of Hennessy Road remain resilient and determined. There is a real sense of community and a strong commitment to improving the quality of life for everyone.

This is a very long stairway, which runs from Pok Fu Lam road to The Westwood. I think this stairway increases the quality of my life mainly from two aspects. First, there are many restaurants and a big supermarket down the stairs in The Westwood. As I live on the top of the stairway, if I want to reach those stores, I have to walk all way down. Climbing such a long stairway contributes to building my physical health. Second, walking on the stairs, I get a fantastic view of the row upon row of buildings, especially in the evening when they turn on the light. The beautiful view benefits my mental health.

Hi Mathew,
Here's the Prince Edward Road West. The road here is narrow and can't have three people pass through simultaneously. I keep colliding with others while passing through the road, which is awful. Also, so many traffic lights are seriously declining walking speed. I feel so depressed when I keep being stopped and blocked by people. Furthermore, I need fresh air here. People are packed here, breathing the air exhaled by others.

It feels like a thumbnail photo of this city. People living in Hong Kong are also being compacted together. They live in crowded, walk in the crowd, having a high pace, but are blocked by people simultaneously. It feels like you can't stop in this country. Otherwise, you would be transcended by others. We can't breathe in this country, building up our mental pressure. I think that's why Hong Kong people have a high living quality and a long life expectancy, but they also have the lowest happiness index, a high suicide rate, and numerous mental health issues.

This is a typical Hong Kong street scene. busy roadway with lots of vehicles and people walking. Everything is arranged closely and near to one another. It is usual to see mixed-use properties with residential apartments on top and retail stores at the bottom. Residents there experience noise and light pollution as a result of the billboards. The link between Hong Kong residents and the city is depicted in this picture. thrived while feeling pressured at the same time.

To define public health, I will not do so by dividing it into mental and physical health because I believe in the urban planning world there are a lot more to consider. Therefore, I would quote Jan Gehl's definition. He believed a well developed city is a blend of necessity, optionality , and social activity. With all these elements, subsequently people will have good public health.

The picture above is a glimpse of central. I would use Central to illustrate what Jan Gehl means. Central has many underground development as well as skyscrapers. It is more like a vertical city.

In terms of the three elements above mentioned, central is a well developed area, with financial hubs all connected on bridges and underground MTR, people can go from buildings from buildings without going outdoors. Moreover, there are also many leisure activities can be done in central such as LKF. What's more, there are also cultural heritage such as Tai Kwun. This shows that Central is well-developed and people have good public health.

On the downside it is the high walkability index of central. The index is a predictor of physical health, chronic diseases outcome and vehicle emissions. Unfortunately, Central has an extremely high value in this.
So I would say ironically, the habitat in central creates both positive and negative impact to people's health.

Tai Shing Street is located near the junction of Wong Tai Sin and San Po Kong. Most of the people there are older people. They like to go grocery shopping at noon. There are parks and basketball courts nearby, and many people will choose to take a walk there at night. Also, there is a smelly drains that looks like a river, I had heard that some people will fish there and sell those fish to others. And because there is a market next to the street, sometimes there are rats and cockroaches crawling on the sidewalk.

In Hong Kong, many places are crowded with people, and this makes our home sometimes suffocating. One of the most well-known places full of people is the wet market. Throughout the day, the wet market is all about people, noise, and smell. Undoubtedly, wet markets in the daytime can be very unhygienic. Not only you are squeezing through people, but you may also step into the sewage water with animal blood due to the raw meat sold. Moreover, residents who live close to these markets often need to suffer from the fishy smell which is sometimes frustrating. What’s worse, due to the complex structure of Hong Kong’s streets, the rat problem is serious and may spread disease and disturbance to neighborhoods.
