<title>Portfolio entry: 1.Dated 2nd July 2017.Within the Caribbean, even in Trinidad and Tobago, there is the a current problem with the use of skin bleaching, whitening or lightening by people of African descent, which is know to cause serious health effects. Skin bleaching is the process at which a person uses chemicals and specified techniques to whiten or brighten the color of the skin. It is common to use creams over a time frame and results may vary depending on various factors such as how long the product is used and if the product ‘agree’ with a person skin.Within the video viewed in class on skin bleaching in Jamaica by persons of darker complexion, who viewed that brown skin was pretty and fashionable was placing them at risk in order to have white or brown skin. This is a similar problem in Trinidad, the variety of skin whitening products promise to give clear, white and beautiful skin, as if to state that black skin was dirty and not beautiful. As seen in the video the brown or white skin is lovey and provided opportunity to those who had frolicked it proudly. This gives the impression that black or dark skin was not beautiful and as stated in the video ‘if you are black stay a back’ which means that if you are black or of dark complexion, stay back and don’t come around, giving the notion that black is not welcome or accepted as something good and beautiful. This gives an idea of self-hate and low self-esteem. As noted in the video as well, some men would use bleaching products to be noticed by the opposite sex and to also be considered attractive to others who see them. This is a similar concept that persons within the region may have, as a common theme that is voiced by men and women is that ‘red woman’ or ‘red man’ does be real sweet (attractive). This is so true for in the past, persons would say that a child is black and ugly or call someone black hen chicken, to indicate that black is ugly. This is a common issue faced in the Caribbean not only in Jamaica but also in Trinidad as well.Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4mlGso5JNo </title>

<title>Portfolio entry 2Date: 10th May 2017Music, more so soca music, which is native to Trinidad and Tobago, is music to raise your spirits and move you to dance. Commenting on Machel Montano music video and song happiest man alive, the song is catchy and makes you feel to dance and wine. While watching the video I couldn’t help but sing along, tap my feet and eventually start to dance, because it was moving. The drums and the base guitar were delightful to my ears. It is that same drum and beat that make you dance for two days straight without pain and complain. It brings back memories of that year when I was getting ready to cross the stage, for carnival. Memories of dancing and enjoy myself, with persons I love, a time that is gone but not forgotten. The song’s words and chorus ignites an emotion of how to feel during a time where persons may have had troubles but was to think that they are to be happy; the happiest man alive, during the carnival season. The words I don’t have no time for no worries and rum on meh mind gives an insight of a people who at most try not to bother themselves and more so focus on drinking rum and partying. This is true for how we as a people think at most times, to live life and drink rum, avoid stressful think and stress itself. I must say that I myself to an extent display such thinking. The world is stressful, money doesn’t die, but people do; so why stress out, enjoy life and be happy. The words of a song can evoke emotions cause us as people to cry, laugh, be angry and have fun. Soca music is an important element to us as Caribbean people; we cannot live and function without it. This song is fun and festive, it is a depiction of how we think at times and it was a great hit from Machel. Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na5eNkT21Ds&amp;feature=youtu.be</title>

<title>Portfolio Entry 4Dated 12th July 2017 Self-evaluation of learning for semester.Caribbean civilization was one of those courses, where its mandatory and you may not like it that you have to do it but after completing the course you are happy that you did it.Initially was not to keen to do this course, I was a bit reluctant at times. The lecturer made the course interactive, participation was a must, I learnt new information on things they taught us in primary school, which I must say was all lies. Christopher Columbus was a criminal and should not get any positive recognition for being an explorer or the one who civilize people; he killed the masses of the indigenous people and tormented them as well.It was for the first time I really dug down to learn more about this country, Trinidad history, I mean before I thought it was boring, but now I had a interest into what really happen and why are our system of things this way. History can make you reflect and get sad, thinking about the way enslaved Africans was mistreated and how today things haven’t really changed. This is my belief that we are still slaves just in a different way. The information obtained on gender and women in the Caribbean, hit at home, women are still not given equal play in society and as such receive many backlash from the community. For example, women don’t have the majority say in executive boards, as it is mostly run by men. Issues as maternity leave and making the workplace mother friendly have not been instituted in most of the region. Most persons still frown upon women who breast-feed in public. Showing that gender base problems of the past have not been resolved.Something that touched me as well, was the issue of sports especially cricket and its significance to the Caribbean. Before I used to wonder why my dad was crying, when we didn’t win at cricket, a game I still don’t understand. After watching the video in class and reading about the sport, I have an appreciation for why Caribbean people have such a deep love and excitement towards cricket, as it shows to other countries of the world that the Caribbean have great things to offer as well and we to can win at this great game. The overall appreciation of this course was to show that history is important to the future. We cannot move forward if we don’t know and care about the past. This course was also important to me as now I know that my fore parents; the enslaved Africans suffered so that I can have a better life and that I should not take it for granted. The learning process was good. I enjoyed using BBC (Blackboard Collaborate), the class sessions was fun and there was learning from both lecturer and students.Thank you, to Ms. Lynette Sampson for bring history and appreciation to a student who had little interest in the topic. </title>
