Poverty is a social issue that affects people across the world. In most places where this is a big issue it's usually in the "ghetto". Highlighting this issue could help aid in addressing it by drawing more attention to it and people may begin donations and/or job programs.

In 1964, President Lydon B Johnson declared a war on poverty. It was not successful because he did not get the support he needed. According to the text, “Johnson’s efforts did not achieve a substantial reduction in the rate of poverty”(Coley, n.d.) However, it was successful in the creation of certain federal programs. For example, Johnson created the Peace Corps, Office of Economic Opportunity, and Economic Opportunity Act. According to the article, the main reason he failed was because he failed to get support from Southerners who didn’t care about the different races in America and some conservatives didn’t care about poverty (Coley, n.d.).
In “What’s Missing in the War on Poverty?” Micheal D. Tanner(2019) states” Johnson declared “war on poverty” in 1965, government efforts to fight poverty have cost more than $23 trillion.” Tanner (2019) proposes to end poverty by reforming the criminal justice system and ending the war on drugs, lowering rent, and improving the education system. I feel this would help because less rent can help you save and better education will get you a better job.

Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang proposes UBI. It is Universal basic income. It’s the amount of money a person will receive if they are making too little money. In this case he suggests everyone over 18 will get $1,000. He thinks we need this because technology is taking over human jobs and the economy is changing. I feel as long as people are responsible and use the money for basic needs it might help (Democratic Presidential Debate 2019).

As you can see poverty is an issue across the U.S. People have tried to put an end to it or at least decrease the amount of poverty since the mid 60's.Yet this still remains an issue despite all the efforts. A cause for the process taking so long is disagreements & lack of support.

Poverty can mess up a person’ s childhood by making them miss out on opportunities. This can hurt society by happening to more and more people in a community then those kids tend to turn into “thugs.”
Black communities are affected the most. In 2018 about 24% of blacks were in poverty. While only about 8% of whites are in poverty. This shows poverty is a social injustice because whites poverty rate has been way lower for more than 20 years. I think this is a social injustice because it shows racial discrimination.

My research shows that poverty can be caused from racial discrimination. This leads to poor communities and less opportunities for people. This mostly happens in black or hispanic areas. I believe we can lower the chances of this happening by reducing racism.Another way we can prevent poverty is with better schooling or cheaper housing. Which will allow better jobs and more money to save.
