He was an American musical arranger, band leader, and pianist who was a leading pioneer in the sound, style, and instrumentation of big band jazz. In 1921 he took a position as a musical factotum for Black Swan records, the first Black-owned recording company, for which he organized small bands to provide backing for singers. He played piano for leading Black singers on more than 150 records between 1921 and 1923. He then began a full time career as a bandleader. He was one of the pioneers of New Orleans Jazz. He was one of the earliest jazz trombonists of the era. At the age of ten, he started his musical career by picking up the banjo, which later influenced the way he played his trombone. It was rumored that at the age of thirteen, Buddy Bolden offered him a place in his band. Unfortunately, he was too young to join. The Foxtrot was one of the most famous and popular dances of the time. Rebellious and ready to embrace the new, they discarded the popular old dances and created new dances in their place. The dances became popular with the 'rebels' as they danced the night away at any social gathering they could. Along with the new social dances, a new way to dance them came as well. The dance partners held one another closer than before, and went with the flow of one another.
