Domain 1: Clinical Expert

For me, the most meaningful aspect was to acknowledge the lived experience of refugees, particularly in their experiences of trauma and subsequent post-traumatic stress disorders. I had enriched my understanding of trauma-informed care in healthcare practices. Having read the clinical expert standard 1.2, I now know we must apply trauma-informed care to prevent re-traumatisation(Migrant & Refugee Women’s Health Partnership, 2019). This knowledge is essential for me because I will have my first placement in aged care, where I might have a chance to meet the relevant patients at the end of the year. I will now need to at least know what trauma-informed care is. Subsequently, I felt that by creating an inclusive, safe, and supportive environment, clinicians could foster trust and empower patients, while also being culturally aware to assist them in being active participants in their own care, thereby improving their overall well-being and health outcomes.

Migrant & Refugee Women’s Health Partnership.
Social Inclusion & Health among Ukrainian Refugee

Social inclusion and a stance against discrimination are imperative social determinants for Ukrainian refugees resettling in Australia. Socially inclusive communities can reduce the amount of social isolation in the refugee population, support the refugee population’s mental well-being, and eliminate barriers to accessing health services, such as mistrust in the healthcare system. In contrast, refugees who experience social discrimination are more likely to be stressed, depressed, and avoid using healthcare services. According to the World Health Organisation (2010), ensuring equal treatment can support health equity and improve long-term health outcomes. Therefore, healthcare practices and policies involving refugees need to be culturally safe and inclusive.

World Health Organisation.
Ukrainian perspectives of health

Ukrainian perspectives of health include traditional remedies in treating colds and minor infections through honey, garlic, and herbal teas. Another facet of Ukrainian health includes spiritual practices in supporting overall well-being, such as through Orthodox Christian prayers. These cultural perspectives influence how patients approach healthcare, in which patients can prefer cultural remedies before accessing healthcare services. Therefore, nurses should be respectful of these cultural perspectives on health when informing their practice to maintain cultural safety for patients.

Naherny, T. (2019).
