Character: The Keeper

1. Dedicated: The keeper was a hardworking individual who took his job very seriously. Throughout the book, he maintained the lighthouse by polishing the light’s lens, trimming the wick, filling the oil tank, winding the clock, painting and writing in his daily log to keep a written history of his chores. When anything was broken, he tried his best to fix it. He would polish the lighthouse to make it very presentable for people to see. All of this work was completed every day during any kind of weather.

2. Loyal: The keeper was very loyal to his wife while they were apart. He wrote letters to her expressing how much he missed her. When she visited him he was extremely excited to see her. When she was carrying their child, he did everything he could to please her. Another example of his loyalty, was when three sailors were involved in a boating accident. The keeper was determined to save the three sailors lives even though he had to risk his own life to bring them to safety.

3. Independent: The keeper was very independent throughout the book because he worked daily by himself to make the lighthouse look presentable. In addition to this, he took his responsibilities extremely seriously and made sure the lighthouse never failed. He tended to it all day long, even during some stormy nights. It is evident that this individual was very independent because many times during the day he did not have anyone else that he could rely upon. Consequently, he worked numerous days and nights by himself to make sure that his job was successfully completed.

The main character of the book titled, Hello Lighthouse, is about a man (the keeper) who was hired to maintain and work at a lighthouse. The lighthouse was located in a bay on a small island across from the mainland. The man was lonely and waited for his wife to join him there one day. He continually wrote letters to his wife while patiently waiting for her. Would the keeper be able to tend to the lighthouse effectively throughout the story?

Character: Wife

1. Encouraging: The wife was always there for her husband. When she appeared in the book, she was supportive of her husband's choice of maintaining the lighthouse. She left her home on the other side of the bay where many things were conveniently located and decided to live with him almost in isolation until his job was completed. She took care of him when he was sick and also helped three sailors after their boating accident. When her baby girl was born she consistently created meaningful family time.

2. Adventurous: The wife was adventurous for living in the lighthouse with her husband. She was willing to travel by boat to arrive and stay there for quite a long time. Traveling by boat can be very dangerous because of the uncertainty of the weather. Illustrations in the book indicate that the wife was hoisted to shore by ropes. The ropes connected the boat to a pole which was attached to rocks located near the lighthouse. Her spirit empowered her to live with her husband and child in a lighthouse across the bay from her typical home.

3. Humble: The wife was respectful to her husband. She made sure that he was well taken care of even if it meant running up and down the stairs to give him the things he needed when he was not feeling well. She would sit by his side while he was resting and assumed some of his responsibilities when he was sick. She did this in the most humblest fashion. She always put herself last so that she could make sure that her husband and child were well taken care of daily.

Comprehension Strategy: Visualizing

In the beginning of the story the keeper was very lonely. Students should close their eyes and think of a time they were lonely. Next, they should collectively brainstorm ways on how to help other students who might experience these feelings in school. Everyone gets lonely at one time or another. It is always comforting to know that a true friend’s support could often fill the void of loneliness.

Inferences could be made regarding the characters feelings and inside character traits. For example, a keeper would have to be quite brave to maintain a safe operating lighthouse. When the sailors in the story were in danger, the keeper did not hesitate to help them and saved their lives. Students should think about times when they needed to be brave. Students should discuss times when they have been brave and supportive of others. Student responses could be written on chart paper or verbally shared together.
