Young readers should feel that they are represented in literature. This collection of books will range from genres such as fiction, nonfiction, biographies, award winners, and much more. I have chosen this collection to show readers that they are not limited to a single story of themselves. The larger purpose of this collection is not only to expose myself to the many books children's literature has to offer, but also open up a world of possibilities for young readers where all can see themselves as the main character.

The book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See" written by Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle is a book that allows young children to identify both animals and colors, making it a great concept book. The book begins with a brown bear being asked what he sees in which he responds, "I see a red bird looking at me." This continues on throughout the book with various other animals of different colors. This book is great to use as a concept book as it helps pre-emergent readers identify the colors that they are learning.

"Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss is a classic children's book that many of us are familiar with. The rhyming book follows Sam I Am as he tries to get someone to eat green eggs and ham even though he consistently refuses. Phrases like, “I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-am” and “not in a box, not with a fox” provide the reader with rhyming words, making it great for pre-emergent readers.

The book Cookie's Week by Cindy Ward follows a little black and white cat as he causes mischief throughout the week. The book starts on Monday with the cat falling into the toilet and chronologically moves on throughout the week. The adult reading with the child can prompt such questions as, "what day of the week comes after Friday?"

The book follows the letters of the alphabet (both lower and uppercase) as they all attempt to climb and stay on a coconut tree. Because there are so many letters, they all fall down from the tree! This book is great for pre-emergent readers because it helps them to identify the letters of the alphabet and associate each lowercase letter with its uppercase counterpart. This book can also be described as a rhyming book as well.

Like many children, George is curious. When he discovers books in a shelf, he is confused by the little black marks and dots on the pages. When he begins to tear the books apart, his friend, The Man With the Yellow Hat, tells him that he has to READ the books to understand what those marks and dots mean. Throughout the book, he walks George through the letters of the alphabet (both big and small). This is a great book for emergent readers as it walks through the entire alphabet and introduces the readers to the concept of uppercase and lowercase letters. The illustrations are colorful, descriptive, and go along with the text.

Pete is having a hard time picking out an outfit to wear. He asks others what he should wear including his mother, his brother, his baseball coach, and even his bus driver! After taking everyone's suggestions, he looks in the mirror and feels that he looks silly. At the end of the story, he puts on what he wants to wear and concludes the book by saying, "if you want to be cool, just be you!" This emergent book provides a great lesson for this age group. At the end of the day, what you think about yourself is most important. The text is easy to read as it is in big print and has much word repetition.

Good-Night, Owl! by Pat Hutchins follows the owl as it tries to sleep. However, many animals keep disturbing his sleep by making noise. After each animal makes noise, the repetitive term "and Owl tried to sleep" is said. This is a great predictable book for emergent readers because after the first few pages and seeing that singular repetitive phrase, the reader will be expecting it to be on the next page.

The frog in the story is met with many predators who want to eat them. For instance, when the fish swims toward the frog, we wonder, "how did the frog get away?" On the following page, it says, "jump, frog, jump!"

I Am Enough by Grace Byers sends a positive message to children that despite differences in skin color, hair color, or other attributes, we are all enough in this world. It features young women offering positive affirmations to themselves and others. Two quotes that stand out to me from the book include, "I'm not meant to be like you; you're not meant to be like me. Sometimes we will get along, and sometimes we will disagree," and "I know that we don't look the same: our skin, our eyes, our hair, our frame. But that does not dictate our worth; we both have places here on the earth." The book does a great job of highlighting our differences, but making students realize that just because we are different, we are not any less than anyone else.

At the beginning of the book, the new students have a hard time fitting in with their peers. They expressed that in their old schools, their friends spoke the same language, which allowed them to conversate with ease. Now that they are in a classroom with English speakers, there are new words that they do not understand. When they were back home, they could write with ease. However, with new letters, "they lie on the page like scribbles and scratches." They felt alone, sad, and confused. However, their classmates make them feel at home by including them in class activities and helping them with new words.

One Child, One Seed is a counting book that also provides children information about Africa. The book follows Nothando, a young girl from South Africa and how her family plants pumpkins to eat. The book begins with showing how she plants one seed, then, how she uses her two hands to plant the seed in the dirt, three of her cousins take care of the seed, and so one. This is a great counting book as it shows pictures of what is being counted, such as people and animals.
