1.     Bo watches Erik farewell his family before the voyage, what does that event evoke in him?
 
Watching Erik farewell his family before the voyage evokes the event of Bo saying farewell to his own family.

  
2.     Although Bo is reminiscing about departing from his family many years ago, what is the technical term used for this effect in a story? 
A flashback.
 
 
3.     What significant insight about human nature does Parrett achieve by use of flashback?
Parrett builds on the character of Bo and shows us where he has come from and where his journey began which led to where he is today. Parrett suggests that leaving home is a difficult but necessary part of growing up for a lot of people, especially if they were raised on an island or in a remote area where there are generally fewer opportunities.

The Nella Dan is characterised when Isla describes the ships as "bigger then you expected". She states how there are "places to sit and all of them felt cosy and comforting and lived in and loved". The polysyndeton suggests that she likes this place "much better" than Hobart.
There are references to time and place - "It was like she came from some other time and some other place."

At the top of p. 36 we see “tiny people … fairies … giant[s]. How does the remainder of this chapter continue to develop characterisation and demonstration of relationships?
After it is stated that they are "like tiny people, like fairies..." the mood of the chapter is lifted a little, and Isla's brother is mentioned a few times. Her brother is happy after he meets Soren. His brother "really laughed" and Isla "saw his eyes, how big they were". At the end of the chapter it is shown that her brother is in a good mood as he said that he would "share the chewing gum".
