Both Rex and Rose Mary Walls make promises fully aware that they are not going to be able to fulfil them. Jeanette and her siblings are constantly let down, especially by their father.  Soon enough the Brian and Lori catch onto the lies but Jeanette seems to have faith in her parents. On her tenth birthday Jeannette asks her father to stop drinking, Lori does not seem to believe he will keep that promise as she says “He tried stopping, but it never lasts.” This represents the theme because Lori is aware of all the broken promises her dad has made and is aware that this time things will not be any different.

The Walls children have to adapt to living a self sufficient life because they know their father is a constant no show alcoholic and their mother only wants to paint and only cares for her own well being. They have to take it upon themselves to find a way to eat and a way to earn money. Jeanette finds food in the trash can at school and she often tries to share with Brian. "She was keeping the wedding ring, she explained, to replace the wedding ring her mother had given her, the one Dad had pawned shortly after they got married.
“But Mom,” I said, “that ring could get us a lot of food.” 
“That’s true,” Mom said, “but it could also improve my self-esteem. Rose Mary and Rex Walls have absolutely no desire to fit it or do things the way everyone else is doing them. They like to rebel against social norms and do things their type of way or other wise known as the "Rex Walls way."  The Walls are not an ordinary family there are many examples of them not conforming to anyone or anything such as their motive of constantly moving , according to Rex the FBI is after him, or allowing their three year old cook hotdogs by herself above an open fire. These actions are frowned upon in society and Rex and Rose Mary have no intention in changing the way they are to fit the expectations of society. A quote that represents the lack of conformity is "The next time they visited, Brian’s head was wrapped in a dirty white bandage with a dried blood stain. Mom said he had fallen off the back of the couch and cracked his head open on the floor, but she and dad had decided not to take him to the hospital.” their decision was not influenced by financial difficulties because they were aware that they were going to check out Jeannette the “Rex walls way” but because they simply did not want him to be there and their belief that it could heal on its on. Any sensible parent would take their child to the hospital but Rex and Rose Mary are not like other parents.

Throughout the Glass Castle the kids have to put up with their parents actions because there is nothing they can really do about it. The children have to deal with their alcoholic dads outbursts and their crazy mothers selfishness and fully accept the type of people that they are even if they completely disagree with their decisions. In the end of the book, when the remaining members of the family gather for thanksgiving the family sit down and give a toast to there father to which Rose Mary says “Life with your father was never boring.” this quote is a perfect example of acceptance because the family has come to terms with Rex’s actions and motives for giving them the life they once lived. Now adults, the Walls children can come to terms and accept their history and the parents who made them the people they are today.

Coming of age can be a reflection of your culture, religion, beliefs, or experiences. For jeannette it meant having her dad pimp her. The day her father took her to the bar to lure men into hitting on her and getting drunk for the benefit of scamming them out of money, Jeanette saw the type of person her dad truly was and how he no longer thought of her as his little girl otherwise he wouldn’t have put her in a life threatening situation. After the incident with Robbie in the bar, Jeanette furiously says “I was so angry at Dad that I couldn’t bear the idea of him rescuing me.” this represents her realizing that she is own her own and no one will do the rescuing for her, she is now an adult who can fend for herself.

The walls kids having so much going on in their lives and so many hardships they have to face and they have every right to be selfish and but their needs first but they don’t, specially Brian. He always cares for the needs of his sisters before his and is willing to get hurt in order to protect his them. When he saw that his sister Jeannette was being beat up back in Blythe, the following day he attempted to scare them off and fight all of them, no questions asked. When the girls explained their escape plan to New York to Brian he pitched in even though he was not included, he is aware of the terrible lives they are all living and even though he is not included he is willing to donate the little money he has to them because he wants them to leave he does not want them to live this way anymore, he puts their needs before his. "Without looking for praise, he quietly added his earnings to the pig, which we named Oz." this quote goes to show the type of person that Brian is, he doesn't help them out for the praise or for something in return he does it because he genuinely cares.
