Finding external partners by Teacher Academy

In my school newly arrived imigrants are our students. We have them and they, unfortunately coming every day. The most of them are low educated or analphabets. The most importan thing in my pedagogical work with them is to be the persson they can trust and they can get a help. I incourage them to approach to me when they need help, not just with the school matter, also if they for excample get a letter from som officials and they do not understand. I am rompletely awair that they do not have anyone here and we, teachers are the only light in dark tunell. I will highly reccomend this to my colleagues, teachers, because I get great feet back from my students.

We have got imigrant students in our school and at this moment many of them are taking part in an eTwinning project which is related to this topic.This way students are the centre of the project and they feel important.They feel confident because we are dealing with topics very close to them.

I brought some families from Morocco, Albania, Romania and China into my class 3 last year because they were involved into a multicultural project. It was really interesting for all students and also for other parents to listen to different stories. This year I will repeat the experience because I am going to make students interview migrants or refugees to make a documentary about inclusion.

I think having a refugee in class may be a great idea but it is really complicated as well. I teach English at a Middle School and I will need to ask permission to my Headteacher, the students' parents and my Consiglio di Classe because I teach teens who may be shocked by this exprerience.

In my class, in Middle School , I've many refugees. It's quite difficult to work with them , because they're pratically analphabets or they don't know any other languages than their own dialect. I often use pictures and drawings to interact with them.

I had a Syrian boy present in one of my classes, where he talked about his life and what led him to leave behind his family and country. Also spoke of how he was received in Portugal. It was a very intense moment. All students who were watching were in a deep silence and absorbed his words. Those who could not be present (for lack of space!) made me promise I would repeat the lecture, and bring Tareq once again to our school. I belive that it was a very important moment in my students life. They could hear the story of someone of flesh and blood, touching them much more than what they hear on TV.

I'd like to bring newly arrived immigrants in my classes but I'm a bit scared of the students' reaction. Sometimes students have negative preconceived ideas that are hard to tackle. I'd like to interview immigrants, exploring the reasons of their leaving their countries, letting them tell their stories, letting students making questions, but most of all I would like to show students how those migrants are close to us, had their own home, routines, family, etc.

The cultural mediator is a professional who slowly is having increasingly popular in my country. The cultural mediator in Fondi is, ultimately, a bilingual agent. His job is to promote communication and understanding between more people, not belonging to the same linguistic community in Fondi.Thanks to the cultural mediator foreign nationals in Fondi residents manage to fit better in the new country. Having an agent that helps them solve the main bureaucratic matters (translate documents, notices and communications) since the early days of the Funds and that leads them to better understand the culture in which we have just entered a part, this gives him a lot of help important for integration.

The mediator helps minorities to access all public services they may need, find a job and a house in Fondi. To do this offers them a single and / or group counseling. They work especially within the associations, hospitals, prisons, schools, courts and collaborate with social services to the Funds.

In Greek educational system noone is allowed to enter school during the working day, if he has not asked for a special permission form the Ministry of education before. It would be quite difficult to bring refugees in the classrooms, unfortunately.

I think it is important to get in contact with newly arrived migrants so that they do not remain an anonymous mass. But it is not easy to bring them into our classrooms: first of all, there are some permissions to obtain, secondly Newly Arrived Migrants should be involved in a project or workshop and finally, last but not least, students should be well prepared and trained to deal with them.

I haven't done that and don't think will do in the near future. There are few refugees and the country government is not dealing well. Refugees have to stay in one place for some time, and after that most of them seek for Germany or other country.

As I said before, I have no refugees or migrants in my classes this year, but that is no excuse as I believe it would be a fantastic experience not only for my students but also for myself.

In spite of having a community of 20 sheltered about only 40 km away, the main obstacle would be communication. As far as I know from what I’ve read and from the contact with the “Fundação” that has been helping them ever since they arrived about a year ago, there are still many language hurdles – so many that a Tunisian translator has been hired to establish the possible threads.

I think that bringing newly arrived migrants in our classroom is a very delicate problem to face in the classroom. Firstly they stay in shelter and are minors. So

I haven't brought a refugee to talk to my students and to be honest it is very difficult to bring a refugee to talk to students in Greek schools. But if I had the freedom to do such a thing, I would certainly do it since it is an ideal way for the students to realise that refugees are common, everyday people and not something unusual and faceless. A teacher from another school who had read an article in a local newspaper about Syrian students in my school contacted me and invited the Syrian students to address a large group of her students who are active in the Amnesty International group in their school. With a class of 17-year-olds we are researching the reasons for migration from various African and Middle Eastern countries towards Europe. Each group of 4 students is preparing a presentation which will look at the political, social and religious situation in the chosen country (also with a brief overview of the historical background - often European imperial) . The students will also try to put themselves in the shoes of a migrant from that country. After Christmas, we shall be inviting representatives of a local migrant centre with some recent refugees to talk about their personal experiences. I think this term's preparatory work is very important and I wouldn't have planned next term's meetings without it.

Well, it's quite difficult in a greek school to organise a migrant's visit to a classroom, because we need a special permission by the regional educational authorities so that a person outside the school come to our classrooms in general. Things become worse when it is about a newly arrived migrant. However, it would be a good idea, I think, to organise a meeting with some migrants in cooperation with parents' assosiation of the school in the afternoon, when the lessons finish, if there are, of course, some parents open minded and positive to migrants.

Yes, quite complicated. The easiest thing would be to ask the parents' of newly arrived migrant students to come to the classes, but there is often the big problem of the language as very few of them speak any of the EU language - or speak those language (French, English) with a particular accent, different words etc- and our students' linguistic competences in these FL don't allow them to understand variations from a standard, simple language. A possible solutions might be to invite parents who have been living in Italy for a while and can speak enough Italian to tell their story; I'm quite sure that their memories about the experience of leaving their countries ( and often part of their families) are still very lively, even after a couple of years.

I am somehow skeptical about inviting a refugee in the class and this is for two reasons. Firstly, you need a special permission from the educational authorities, which is quite difficult. Secondly, some parents may consider it "dangerous" bringing their children in contact with refugees. What about inviting both a Greek Smyrna-refugee (in 1922 Greek people who lived in Smyrna viciously flee to Greece) and a newly arrived migrant? In this way the students will have the chance to find similarities and differences between them. And I'm sure that they will be surprised!

However, the way in which this topic is addressed in the classroom depends on the particular style of the teacher among other factors. I'm really concerned about parents' reactions. People here are worried and think in a brutal and simple way: migrants/refugees are dirty; they're spreading disesases; they steal; they make us even poorer. Stuff like this.

But I get my constitutional and statutory freedom of teaching, may be blessed the Italian Constitution. I launched a preliminary brainstorming in a class (13th grade). First results in this ratherly caothic padlet (in progress): https://padlet.com/eth98/uzuu6imhxrjd . They wrote, sang, draw, serched the Net and pasted their materials in a common blackboard.

The students' reactions are very different. Some are enthusiastic. Others are terrified. “I'll never speak to those people”.

Some students have taken indipendent initiatives. A girl made friends with a refugee. Stopped him in a street and talked to him. She accompanied him to visit the historic sites of the city (migrants and refugees are not allowed to enter historical places and urban centres here in Italy: they have to stay in the suburbs). Here you can see a poligonal wall, maybe Vth century bC, and a medioeval gate. She asked him to tell his story. She embraced him because she understood that no human being ever touched him here, except officials.

I'm concernded by these reactions, too.
But I suppose this is a problem of mine.

A visit of an immigrant to a Greek school is extremely difficult task for a teacher, because of the laws. We need a special permission of the authorities. What can be done is a students visit in the reception areas and accommodation of refugees. Given the school regulation and the distance between our school and the place where immigrants are staying at present, it would be very difficult to bring an immigrant in the classroom. In case it was realised, it would be a really good chance for students to talk to an immigrant face to face and see that immigrants are individuals who deserve being treated on equal terms as the rest.

Typically from us, when you have a refugee child in class who does not say a single word of Italian is a little tragedy, because it does not provide any kind of support that allows an intermediary translator. I’ve never organized a meeting between my students and refugees. I think it could be difficult, because of school rules and insurance rules. Must I have also authority’s permission in Italy? I wonder if the meeting could be organized in neutral zone outside the school, as a park or an NGO headquarters, for instance during a welcome event, or a musical event. Another matter is language: many refugees come from Africa (Eritrea, Somalia, Ethyopia) and they can’t speak Italian nor English.

I think that I can easily organize a meeting with my students’ migrant parents, but they usually are not refugees.

I had a new arrived migrant (not a refugee) from Ghana last year. it was very difficult: she spoke only english, and she had some domestic problems. She was kind and polite, but she was shy. She did'nt want to have speak with any classmate except another girl from Ghana. the teacher tried to help them, also for the domestic problem: we gave her simple survey (sometimetranslated in English) of the subject, she went to an Italian L2 course, but it wasn't very useful. The girl was not passed. Unfortunatly the situation is almost the same this year...
By the way e keep on trying. We also work for raising awarness about people coming from Asia or Africa reading books and newspapers and watching films. Next week we are going to watch a film of Festival del Cinema Africano.

The school alone can not do much without outside help, because they are children with great difficulties and then there is a need for many permission to organize a meeting with these new migrants. Every september, at the beginning of the course, there are newly arrived migrants (not refugees) in my classroom. In my opinion, how students welcome immigrants is not a big problem. It’s a teacher who acts as a role model on how to deal with newly arrived migrants. I think that the worst issue is the language. Ignorance of language can worsen integration. In Spain, this case doesn’t occur when they are immigrants from South America or Guinea. In that case the integration is much easier.

In our school it has been decided short time ago, that there would be migrants coming to school, but in the afternoon. Many parents of the students of the morning school were opposed. The headmaster assured them that the migrant children would use different toilets (!!!!) and that the classroom would be immediately cleaned after the lesson (!!!!!). I teach italian language in a secondary school and my students are between 11 to 14 years. Often there are foreign students in my classes. From last year in my first class there is a girl from India. At the beginning she was very silent and embarrassed, but this year she understands and speaks Italian well enough and so she enjoy to partecipate in school life. Unfortunately there are no contacts with classmates outside of school because there are still many prejudices.

In my school every year there is at least a migrant. We organized for them courses of italian speech, but I noticed that some of them aren't interested or don't want to learn the language. It depends from their origin. The african migrants are the most involved, thenasian ones the less.
In my city Caritas, a no profit organizatín, organize workshops in schools to talk about migrants and refugees.

An activity that used to be done often in schools was the encounter with refugees. The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) had a team of refugees who would come to schools and spend the day there, holding talks, celebrating with their music and so on. It was an event that humanised refugees, they were no longer the tired face in the newspaper, they had a story, they had likes and dislikes, they had hope and most of all they were not victims. They were people trying to stand on their own two feet again, after fleeing from their homes. The students learnt a lot from this event, but sadly it was stopped because teachers did not do follow ups to consolidate what had been learnt

The main problem for me is that the number of migrants arriving in my locality are already in touch with friends, family and organizations, and come primarily for the work. For a few years, then, the situation has stabilized, so it is difficult to find new migrants who have just arrived here.

Three years ago, I worked in a secondary school where arrived a boy escaped from Libia. He was a skilled worker there and he had a good salary. But when the civil war began he was arrested and many of his colleagues,too. Someone were tortured and killed. He said that only possibility was to escape by the sea. In the past, I have discussed this topic with kids who had very recently immigrated to Italy and I have let them talk about their and their parents' experience. I had discussion with students whose parents had fleed because of war, from ex Jugoslavia or Ruanda, and they told their peers about the stories of their families.
here, we have an organization (Caritas) helping newly arrived immigrants, but bringing them to school (even with their help) would be quite a work, because of bureaucracy. Even so, in my school we are discussing a project about immigration so I guess we'll get in touch with Caritas to get their support!

One time we shared some traditional uses from the original country of our students with the families. We went to their home and prepare cakes with them and finally made a theatral rappresentation about that. It has been very important for all of us.

In the next time and exactly in February 2017 I organized a meeting between my students and some refugees that in this moment live in Biella town. I asked to association: CARITAS and I spoke with the responsable . We arranged a meeting. I explained the families our intentions and they agreed . I hope it will be a good opportunity to fall the prejudices.

It is realy complicated.You need first the Directorate's permision, and then you need to discuss alot in the school in order to convince your headmaster and other teachers.Finally you may have also resistance from parents.But its worth to fighit for...

For every child who's mother tongue is not Bulgarian, must been charted a team to help him, get him to provide additional advises. This is done in collaboration with a team of teachers and other specialist. That is why the theme of migrants need to acquire more visibility in our educational systems.

I think that schools and teachers should be supported by specialised staff in order to help these young people who have suffered devastatig trauma

In my place we don;t have refugees but on the other we are already a multicultural society as there are Christians, Muslims ( of Turkish origin,of Pomak origin and of Roma origin) and also Armenians living together for centuries. Thirty years ago immigrants from ex Soviet Union came and settled here speaking Russian and the dialect of Pontus most of them Christians. So in our schools , classes have a multicultural synthesis and that means we have to take it in consideration when we speak and teach. Students follow the way the city is arranged ecen in the schoolyard that means divided in their own groups and mainly speaking turkish the Muslims . When I speak to the students I have to think what I say just in case something is transfered in the wrong way to their homes. But my main aim is to help them know each other and cooperate.

I definitely believe that it would be a great experience for my students to bring newly arrived migrants into my classroom but difficult to realise it. Refugees may not be willing to come to our school but bureaucracy as well won't make it easy either.

There some refugees and migrants who are ready to take part in lessons and meetings. They speak Polish. They can be invited to schools, I read some relations from Słupsk. There would be probably some problems with the costs of the trip and accomodation.

There are some individual stories prepared by ngos in You Tube. I am going to present them to students but mostly in a traditional paper way (because of the lack of proper IC facilities in my school).

It is not so easy just to bring newly arrived migrants into the classroom, because you have to have a closer contact and confidence. Sometimes these students are traumatized. Even if you have some in your class it could take a lot of time until they start to talk about their situation. They also have to speak the language.

Even if there is no existing European network about this topic I think it will be easy to invite a migrant to talk inside classrooms. There are many local and national organizations in Italy and also in this town who can give us support. I think that it will be better to organize a small project inside school in collaboration with other teachers in order to involve a higher number of students.

The project, of course, must be approved by the headmaster and by the council of teachers expecially if there are economical expenses to substain. I think that the only problem is burocracy but if the project is well detailed and presented in the right terms there will be no problems for it to be approved.

The arrival of migrants in the classroom is not complicated. In the north of Italy for many years in the classes coming economic migrants from different countries, Africa, China and eastern europe. My students could experience the inclution of a newly arrived migrant a few years ago, when a student from Georgia came to our school. The new classmate was welcomed and included in the best way. With the help of the other students she also learned Italian language very fastly. A great experience!

My school is in Catania (Sicily), a city where there is a long tradition about newly arrived migrants. Generally all teachers collaborate to develop a good integration and dialogue into classroom. Teachers make personalized study plans to help pupils too. However I think it's is very important known new activity and good practice.

In my country there has been a long traditon of kids from other arriving from other countries attending schools, however, it has not been very common for newly arrived migrants to do so. I believe that the best way to help these students would be for all the teachers to co-operate with the Municipality of the area as well as other formal institutions. At the moment I don't have new migrants in my classroom. I have foreign students that were born in Italy, but in the past years I have a pupil from Bangladesh and from Sri Lanka.
We use cultural mediator, person who helps immigrants with integration into society person who helps immigrants with integration into school. They help family and students.
Sometimes we went to workshops in Laboratorio migration of Genova help and activities in order to help classrooms to stay better together.
We work on very interesting tales and books for primary school.
