Board of Education established segregation as unconstitutional. The government utilized Segregation to outcast colored people from the rest of society, similar to the crucible and how the courts arrested and executed "witches" to  rid them of the community. The civil rights movement was a struggle for social justice that took place mainly during the 1950s and 1960s for blacks to gain equal rights under the law in the United States. Most people opposed the efforts of this new movement as it contradicted the traditional setting of society by merging the two races together. Some who were strongly opposed to this would physically harm members of the Civil Rights Movement when they initiated in boycotts or non-violent protests. Racial discrimination based on physical appearance caused inaccurate judgement on the character of colored people. This compares to The Crucible and how people accused woman of being a witch without concrete evidence. For example, when Elizabeth Proctor is accused by Mary Warren the court does not question it as their only goal is to eliminate this oppressed group. Controversy on legalizing gay marriage has exposed the efforts of those who wish to change the idea of a traditional marriage and those who would much rather maintain the typical bride and groom. In an article by pro and con some argue that Gay marriage is protected by the US Constitution's commitments to liberty and equality as ruled by the supreme court, "freedom of personal choice in matters of marriage and family life is one of the liberties protected by the Due Process Clause." Although those in the LGBT community are criticized, they are aware of their rights and fight to maintain them. This is similar to the Salem Witch trials and how those who are accused of being a witch fight to prove them wrong by attempting to reform the way situations like these should be handled. Those against same sex marriage argue that, "There are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God's plan for marriage and family... Also, this portrays how people are questioning the traditional ideals of society about witches, as any person can be accused of such a crime without concrete evidence, therefor threatening their civil liberties.
