The Arctic Monkeys- Album advert

The Arctic Monkeys album advert follows a monochrome colour scheme, this highlights the band's soft-rock genre and follows the conventions of the genre. The fact that it is black and white follows the band's usual aesthetic look as the band frequently portray eras such as the 50s and 60s in their work and therefore the black and white further emphasises this.

The album advert includes the band's artwork in the centre of the page. The inclusion of the artwork (could be seen as a logo) makes them seem familiar and also easily recognisable as it is apparent throughout most of their work. The logo bares resemblance to a sound wave, adding a sense of movement to the piece, it also is reminiscent of the fact it is advertising a music album. As the artwork is in white, like the text, it does not distract too much from the information that is given, therefore allowing the advert to still be clear and concise.

The band's name is written in a typeface that has the letters placed at slightly different angles, making it seem more dynamic. It is also placed at the top of the page, allowing it to be clear and also making it one of the first thing people see. The typeface used is one that is regularly used by the brand and so the use of it in the advert adds a sense of familiarity and allows the viewer to recognise the brand identity.

As the aim of the advert is to let the fans know when the album is being released, one of the most important features of the advert is the release date which clearly states "09.10.13". Despite this being written in a small font compared to the huge logo and band name title, it is written clearly due to its bold typeface and the clear contrast of the white letters against a black background.

The advert doesn't follow all the conventions typical of an album advert, as it does not reference tour dates, images of the band, a website or a record label. The fact that the band steered clear of these conventions is reflective of the minimalist look the advert was trying to achieve; in many ways not following such conventions can be seen as a set back as they help with the sales and also help promote the group, but in this case all the necessary information was included, such as the release date, the album name and the band's name.

Taylor Swift- Album advert

The advert for Taylor Swift's album, Red follows many conventions typical of an album advert, for example both the name of the artist and the name of the album are featured right in the centre of the advert. The title "Red" is in bold, red letters- the use of red is interesting as it stands out clearly against the colourless background making it one of the first things that the viewer will see.

Another convention that the advert adheres to is the use of an artists image. The image of Taylor Swift that is used on the poster presents her in a very simple and almost plain outfit. The photo uses a black and white effect, drawing the attention to the text on top of the photo. There is also an image of the cover of the album on the advert, although it is not the main image. The use of the album cover on the advert makes it easily identifiable to those interested in purchasing it as the artwork will be familiar to them.

The advert includes a logo for "target" which is a popular american shop, the logo and text stating "exclusively at target" allows the viewer and fans to know where they can purchase the album and therefore will benefit both Swift and also Target as both will earn profit.

Additionally, the ad has titles of some of the popular songs from the album that were released as singles beforehand. In doing this, fans of Swift's work and particular pieces of it, such as the two songs given as examples, will be recognised and many who will have heard the songs may think that they should purchase the album as they liked the other songs they've heard.

A final convention used is the reference of Taylor Swift's website at the bottom of the page. The link to her website is helpful in raising awareness of Swift, whilst also allowing fans to have an insight into her life and the album, as many singers use their websites as a platform to release behind the scenes footage and information about tours etc.

Alt-J- Digipak

The digipak includes the name of the band "Alt-J" in bold letters on the digipak cover, The colour of the writing in orange and purple, presenting a galaxy effect that is a theme continuous throughout the digipak. The use of the band name in such clear, distinctive writing is intrinsic on the digipak as it allows the consumer to be able to see visibly whom the artist/band is.

The album title, "Matilda" is placed directly below the band's name allowing the viewer to see the relationship between the two. The title is written in the typeface and style of the band name, but is slightly smaller, drawing more attention to the name of the band, rather than the title of the album. This draws upon conventions of a digipak as despite the fact that the album is what is being sold, the the band are aiming to promote themselves through producing a new album and creating music, therefore the band name is arguably one of the most important aspects of the digipak.

The digipak features lyrics, a convention frequently found on digipaks as it allows the target audience to gain a deeper understanding of the songs and the lyrics. However, this specific digipak only features the chorus of the featured song of the album "Matilda" and no lyrics to the other songs. This could be due to the fact that the album, although having multiple songs, is mainly focused on the song Matilda.

The track listings shown on the digipak allow for an easier experience for the audience as they are able to easily navigate the digipak and understand the different track numbers. The track listings on Alt-J's digipak are written in white against the galaxy themed background making them stand out, however the track numbers are in orange, tying in with the colour scheme, giving the digipak artwork a clear coherence.

The barcode is placed on the back of the digipak and is at the bottom right hand side of the page. Every digipak features a barcode so that it can be easily purchased. Different digipaks present the barcode in different ways, for example on the Alt-J digipak is not too obvious as it is on the back and is not enlarged too much, however on some packaging the barcode is much more visible. On digipaks there is no need for the barcode to be overtly visible as it is not necessary for it to distract from the artist and the album.

The band logo which is the triangle that the code "alt-j" makes on a keyboard ( ∆ ) is seen across the digipak, it is most visibly seen taking up one whole page of the digipak. Although not part of the logo, it incorporates the galaxy theme linking it to the rest of the digipak. The logo is also included in the album title "Matilda" with the A being replaced with the logo. The repetitive use of the logo really engrains it into the audiences mind, strengthening the band's brand identity.

Justin Bieber-Digipak

The album name, "Believe" is printed in bold letters across the cover of the digipak. It is one of the more obvious features of the digipak as it is written in big, white writing, going against the use of warm colours seen on the digipak such as orange, yellow and red.

The artist's name is much more subtle than the album name as it is written at the top of the digipak cover in a small sized type face. This could be due to the fact that the album is the main point of interest on the digipak, although it is unconventional for the digipak to have such a small reference to the artist's name

There are a broad range of artist images of Justin Bieber across the digipak- perhaps why the artist's name received such a small reference as the artist's identity is still visually clear. Two of the pictures appear to be focused on Bieber's overall look as they are long shots and show his full physique; one is particularly focused on his silhouette as he is placed in front of a full moon. The image on the cover focuses much more clearly on his face and his features. Finally, the image on the back page of the digipak shows Bieber playing the guitar on a stall, essentially busking. This allows the viewers and his fans to see him in a positive light as it makes him seem much more humble and reminds the audience of Bieber's beginnings and how he originally was in fact a busker.

The track listings are located on the back page of the digipak and allow the target audience to have clear knowledge of the songs included on the album and allow them to clearly navigate the album. This is a common convention of digipaks.

The barcode is on the back page in the bottom corner. As the background of the back page is white, the barcode is much more subtle and does not stand out as much. Very often, the price can be found near the barcode, however on the 'Believe' digipak this is not the case and there does not seem to be a price clearly visible on the digipak. The lack of price could be due to a number factors such as the fact it is being sold on an international scale, so the price may vary from country to country.

The Website is included on the back page along the bottom, it is placed in quite a discrete way, but the information is still on the digipak allowing the target audience to view the website which often features behind the scene information and things promoting the artist, for example merchandise etc.
