She explained her motivation for joining the Third AD Skills Boost:

“Having just started getting experience as a Third on River City I hoped that this training would really support my progression in my career. There are a lot of training schemes for people joining the industry, but I think a practical course like this is so helpful when moving from runner to Third as there is a lot to think about when you move up.”

Led by experienced ADs Alex McKay and Mark O’Connor, the programme provided practical insights into the specific responsibilities of a Third AD. Sessions focused on both theory and real-world application, offering participants the chance to reflect, ask questions, and share experiences with peers at a similar stage in their careers.

One of the most valuable aspects of the training for Eilidh was being part of a learning environment with other aspiring Third ADs. The programme offered the rare chance to pause, reflect, and share experiences outside the fast pace of a live production.

The opportunity to practice and receive feedback was a key confidence booster:

“Normally, you’re kind of just thrown into these situations when you step up. So to be able to practice and learn what you did well—I think it’s really valuable.”

By the end of the programme, Eilidh felt better prepared for the practical realities of working in the Third AD role. She highlighted the unique value of having direct access to highly experienced professionals:

“The course was very well presented, very informative and valuable as there isn’t another course available like this. It is great to also have tutors who have so much knowledge and experience to pass on. To be able to ask questions and get real answers is something that isn’t available otherwise.”
