Hello everyone!

My name is Marijana Smolčec from a small town of Ogulin in Croatia!

I have been teaching English language for the past 14 years in the secondary school Gimnazija Bernardina Frankopana. For the past 4 years I am trying to implement technology into my classes. I have involved my students in many online collaborative projects using social networks such as Facebook, Google+, Skype, eTwinning (TwinSpace), but I have also

coordinated a two-year Comenius project from 2012-2014.

My school has just recently become an e-school which means we will soon get Future Classroom Lab plus wifi connection, tablets and other tools. I am so much looking forward to it because, so far, I have only tried to use mobile phones with my students to do some online quizes such as

Kahoots, but they would mainly use their 3G or 4G mobile connections. I hope I will learn a lot in this Course as I don't have much experience with Tablets or iPads, but I have been reading a lot about it and have recently got Tablet of my own, so I am willing to explore more new tools and ways of teaching and learning with Tablets.

The funny thing is that my first encounter with Samsung or any Tablet was in November in 2014 when I had the chance to visit Future Classroom Lab in Bruxelles as a part of European Creative Project.

OK, Let's start learning and sharing!

Module 1.7 Q1. WHY use TABLETS in Class

Why use tablets IN CLASS?

Well the first reason for me would be that it would be cheaper to have a tablet in class with all the e-digital materials on it of various subjects than a heavy bag full of rather expensive books.

Other reasons are our students. They are digital natives, they are audio - visual types, even though they share many multiple intelligences they can use tablets and be more creative in class and especially in some subjects that are usually difficult for them

or they find them boring with the use of tablets can become more interesting to them etc.

Having many interesing apps installed, being able to use Wifi on your tablet can make the learning valuable, students could collaborate more easily and they could even easily correlate various subjects which could bring to critical thinking students that we all talk about and aspire!

I can't wait to start using tablets in class. They would be of great benefit for some of my Inclusive students as well. Super gadget invention indeed! :)

Module 4.Personalized learning

I would agree with the video which states that personalize learning is becoming more and more popular even though we are not aware of it yet. I mean, when you google things up, google already reminds you of suggested topics and things you'd searched for before . When you are watching videos on youtube and if you don't clean your history often, youtube already suggestes videos you might be interested in. So, therefore, this can be considered as personalize learning. If we use tablets and students install prefered app or tools for the specific type of their learning - it makes their learning easier and they can collect the lesson plans, ideas, they can brainstorm, bookmark, take and write Learning Dairies , like we are doing here in order to use them one day. By the end of school year they can get the learning scenario and the topic of their interest to its fullest. I am sure tablets can help them store their preferebale informations and help in enhancing learning and collaborating among each other and their teachers. They just need to know which tool to choose according to their needs. Teachers can help a bit here. BUT, as many collegues have written before me, until some countries change the curriculum of the traditional learning, it will be difficult to start with personalized learning. One of the ways I cab see personalized learning being achieved is through flipped classroom - it might take a lot of effort for teacher to prepare it, but I am sure it will be worth it.

Flipped Classroom - pros/cons

Flipped Classroom is an interesting learning concept, but it can have its pros and cons. I have tried to implement it into my classroom, but not as much as I wanted to. What I usually ask my students is to search online about some interesting topics, about the theme we are exploring in class. For instance, now I have given two groups to share their favourite book or a movie trailer as we are talking about media and writing book and film reviews. They need to post a short description of a film or a book and share a link of a video or an image cover on the Private Padlet wall I created. This can be seen as homework, but their task is to create groups and discuss the content they have shared, idenitify suitable and new vocabulary and later in class try to write a Review of a film or a book instead of doing it at home. This is useful as it prepares them for their Writing exam and working in groups and reading what other colleges have said helps them build their critical thinking and extend their vocabulary. At home, when online, I sometimes suggets in class suitable websites for them to explore so they don't need to search them and this is advisable for primary students, even though I teach secondary.

The negative side could be that teacher also needs to spend a lot of time in creating such flipped classroom content. I know many collegues who said they spent hours in sharing, and creating tutorials or video etc. BUT, once you get a hang of it, it is getting easier and easier by the day. Of course as any other classroom method I wouldn't use it all the time, during the whole school year, but few times a year, slowly at first to see how students react, then get their feedback and see what next and how we can improve it.

How do you form groups?

I sometimes form group by random choice. using numbers

1,2,3 etc, and students with the same number need to work together and from

a group. Sometimes I leave it to them, they form groups with other pair sitting closley

to the. That's easier if oyu wish to save time. Sometimes I form groups according to

needs of students, depending of their interest an dthe lesson activity.

How do you make sure they all collaboarte and contribute?

That is a difficult question, but when teacher prepares well he can give acertain task iwthin

a group to each student and ask him, her to give feedback on his/her work. This is great when students prepare for debates. As a language teacher I divide them accoridng to Listener, writer, argument collector etc.

Challanges in assessin groups.

I would say I still don't have an aswer to that, but I do try to make a rubric for the task so if they have created the assignmet they get mark of points as a group, but I also tyr to follow how much they are contributing while monitoring and giving feedback so I give marks to individual students seperatly. So, they can get two grades. Depends, still very difficult.
