  • Commitment from the top down for this work. Don’t know what the findings will be – has to be authentically youth-led. Can’t engineer what the findings are, 2nd guess youth.
  • Understand the stakes. E.g. commitment to strategic planning up front, whatever the findings. Has to be more than just a “fun project.”
  • Data integrity and research integrity.  Not a “youth project.”  It’s research. Head of research and eval leading, not youth specialists (though may be involved). Has to be real research. Not “kid” project.
  • Cash. Have to pay young people and have dedicated staff time. Youth ~20 hours/week. Also 30+ for Ivan plus Andrew and Da’Naya.
  • Understanding holistic piece. Some of the time also dedicated to youth development, 1-1 time and relationships with them, see how they’re doing – recognize this as part of their lives.
  • Think about youth capacity. Drew from existing youth board, already trained in presenting to adults, committing to program. Have to be ready for level of participation – or have to invest time on front end to prepare young people. Soft skills + research matter.
 
Pre-requisite for what cabinets need to have:
  • Youth data squad curriculum – has budget lines to use.
  • Using FSG water model: https://www.fsg.org/publications/water_of_systems_change
  • Brooklyns have real urgency around racial equity. Have to work in area where there’s political will. “Community readiness” to stare it in the face and tell the truth. True for every piece of research but especially here.
  • MEW: sounds like capacity (time + $) and political will (commitment up front) and clear driver (invested leader who can connect research and utilization – the way alongside the will)
