For the brief I was given the task to create and develop illustrations and reaserch for the Matilda musical. We have been asked to focus on two specific scenes with that being 'revolting children' and 'when I grow up'.

While creating my illustrations I will develop and improve different art styles and techniques.

To achieve this i will create multiple pieces of work that surround the areas of schools and parks this is so they can fit into the backdrops of the two Matilda scenes.

With the theme of the work being around children I took some inspiration from the musical and the use of teddies since they are a key aspect in most children's lives that holds immediate significance. I finished with two different variations that I thought were quite common and universally shared between genders and ages. For the linework i used black pens and swapped the thickness throughout my work to add more dimension the teddies.

For this work I was thinking about parks and what you would come across. I finished two simple drawings of a tree swing and a circus tent, they are both quite rare in a park but I felt this would capture the imagination a little more. These two selections also offer a traditional feel and are easily pictured as part of a bygone era.

The water colour links to the original kind of artsyile of the matilda books and art work this adds familiarity while still looking unique in its own aspects. I added some lifeworks using a ballpoint pen just to create difference between then colours and make the image pop out and become more appealing to the audience with a light almost childlike look to it.

I have created an image of teacups stacked in a random fashion. This is to illustrate the amount of children in the school and their interests and what they individually see as fun. Tea parties being a very common aspects of children's childhoods it only seemed reasonable to use it for this purpose.

I used oil pastels for a childlike aesthetic almost like a child has drawn it themselves. It has bright and bold colours that intentionally clash together to create a beautiful messy look which will catch attention. This was definitely a good technique for the matilda theme as it is both childlike is design and theme.

For this piece I was thinking primarily about the decorations inside of the school and especially the classrooms.

I have constructed the lamp in a very unrealistic way as to add mystery annd creativity. I found nyself inspired by the work of Tim Burton abd the result is very cartoony. This will help link the piece to the theme 'revolting children' almost reflecting their crazy 'revolting' imaginations twisting the boring reality around them in a school which traps their creativity and freedom.

I used watered down ink to blow a splash of green surrounding the main piece of the lamp to add that bright colour contrast the the black used in the lamp then a went in with a marker or a lighter more yellow green to create more markings and doodles around the lamp.

This can also reflect the original artwork of the Matilda books.

While working with this technique I came across quite a few issues. First I had chose an image that I diddnt know wouldn't be as suitable for this technique this is because of the cramped close space that isn't really easy to recognise and distinguish as a bunch of books. If I were to do this again I would space our the books more as to create more blank space so we can actually recognise the shapes that are going on in the image.

Overall the technique gives the look and aesthetic of an old newspaper which I find very appealing especially towards more of the old classroom setting of matilda.
