What happens in our minds when we read

“Any book lover can tell you: diving into a great novel is an immersive experience that can make your brain come alive with imagery and emotions and even turn on your senses.”

If you read constantly, this action becomes a habit that could be a very valuable thing. This habit can bring many benefits:

Strengthens your brain -> Reading lights up your entire brain. A 2013 study out of Emory University measured readers MRI scans as they read a book. They found that the deeper readers went into the story, the more areas of their brain activated. Even more surprisingly, this activity stayed elevated for several days after participants finished the book. The more you read, the stronger these complex networks of activity become.

Reduces your stress -> According to a study, reading reduces your stress levels by up to 68%. In as little as six minutes of being immersed in a book, your heart rate slows, your blood pressure lowers, and your muscles begin to relax. To enjoy the long-term benefits of reading, research suggests that thirty minutes of daily reading impacts the physical symptoms of stress. It doesn’t matter what type of book you read, including audiobooks, as long as you’re able to focus on reading without interruptions.

Expands your knowledge -> In this digital era, it might be easy to believe that you can only get useful information from Youtube videos. Books are written from decades of experience, which is impossible to deliver in just a few minutes of video content. Digital sources of information are useful and might help you get started on your research, but to go beyond the surface and gain profound knowledge in any subject, you need the expansive knowledge reading brings.

Enhances Creativity and Imagination -> Reading helps you expand your own imaginative world. As you read, your occipital lobe is activated, the area of your brain responsible for processing visual information. This is particularly effective while reading fiction, as imagining the worlds and characters an author describes helps you visualize what you’re reading. You’re taking an abstract concept and making it real in your mind.

Improves Your Concentration and Focus -> Technology trains you to be distracted. “Did you know that it takes twenty-three minutes to get your focus back on track after being distracted?” Every time you stop one task because of a notification, you’re reinforcing the reward mechanism in your brain, making it harder to concentrate. When you block out undistracted reading time, you’re exercising your focus and concentration muscles. The longer you stay engaged in the book, the more you’re rewarding focus instead of distraction. This will help increase your attention span, making it easier to concentrate on daily tasks.

Why volunteering is important?

Volunteering conects you to others. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people, animals, and organizations in need.

This activity helps you make new friends and contacts. One of the best ways to make new friends and strengthen existing relationships is to commit to a shared activity together. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, especially if you are new to an area.

Volunteering increases your social and relationship skills. While some people are naturally outgoing, others are shy and have a hard time meeting new people and also gives you the opportunity to practice and develop your social skills, since you are meeting regularly with a group of people with common interests.

This activity is good for your mind and body. Volunteering increases self-confidence. This can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. You are doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplishment. Reducing the risk of depression is another important benefit of volunteering. A key risk factor for depression is social isolation, but this activity keeps you in regular contact with others and helps you develop a solid support system, which in turn protects you against stress and depression when you’re going through challenging times.

Volunteering can advance your career. This can teach you valuable job skills. Just because volunteer work is unpaid doesn't mean the skills you learn are basic. Many opportunities provide extensive training.

Volunteering can provide career experience, this offers you the chance to try out a new career without making a long-term commitment. It is also a great way to gain experience in a new field. In some fields, you can volunteer directly at an organization that does the kind of work you’re interested in. For example, if you’re interested in nursing, you could volunteer at a hospital or a nursing home. Your volunteer work might also expose you to professional organizations or internships that could be of benefit to your career.

Social media: pros and cons

PROS

We often only think about the bad that goes along with social networking, but there are many great effects of social media on people of all ages. The most obvious positive effects of social media focus on communication and socialization. These sites help us keep in touch with people we may not regularly see, call, or text.

Social networking also allows users to meet people they may not have otherwise met. Even if a person has a niche interest, they can find their community online. These platforms are often a way for people who may be introverted to make friends. For many, it can help to alleviate loneliness and depression.

There’s also the convenience factor. It’s easy to get in touch with a large group of people at one time. Users can share information quickly and effectively. This power becomes even more evident in times of crisis when users can report themselves safe and ease the worries of their friends and loved ones.

Social platforms can also allow people to precipitate social change on massive scales. Users can share ideas and experiences and even organize to affect change.

CONS

While the positives are great, it’s equally important to acknowledge the negative effects of social media. One of the biggest concerns is that social media use can lead to poor mental health, particularly in young adults. Features like infinite scroll and algorithms designed to continue showing related interests keep people on these sites as long as possible. As with any obsession, people sacrifice much of their time for social media and mental health suffers.

Social media use can cause a lot of insecurities, especially in teens. Kids follow famous people on these sites and set unrealistic expectations for body image. Seeing people who are often popular and considered beautiful can give teens a negative body image. A negative body image can lead to low self-esteem and even eating disorders.

Young adults and millennials are often bombarded with images and videos of influencers who appear to be living picture-perfect lives. They fail to realize that presenting these perfect images is how these people make money and develop unrealistic expectations of what happiness should look like. When their own lives fall short, they may experience loneliness and depression.

Since people spend so much time online, they often suffer from information overload. While information is good, too much information can lead to confusion or even a lack of factual evidence. Information overload can have far-reaching ramifications and can even influence how people vote.

If our sense of self-efficacy is low, we are less likely to begin a task or to see it through.

Perfectionism

People may delay tasks they believe they won’t perform well or that they’ll fail altogether. They may try to put off a task until they suddenly feel more inspired or have a better idea, even though inspiration is more likely to strike once a person starts a task.

Feeling bored

It makes sense that if you perceive an activity as boring or unpleasant, you’re far more likely to put it off until later.

Distraction

Distractions in our environment can prevent us from focusing on the task at hand.

Social media

One of the most popular reasons why teenagers procrastinate is social media.
