Southern viewpoint
1.the tariff laws helps north and hurts south. Most of the manufacturing in U.S. was done in north. The taxes got higher.
2. Stories of cruelty have been greatly exaggerated. Uncle Tom's Cabin book read by Northerners is an unfair description of slavery.

1.wanted to keep using a tariff to protect American manufacturers from cheaper foreign products, especially goods from England.
2.Slavery is wrong. One man should not be permitted to own another. The Declaration of Independence makes this clear by saying that 'all men are created equal. But slavery in south have no equality.

The Emancipation Proclamation led the way to total abolition of slavery in the United States. With the Emancipation Proclamation, the aim of the war changed to include the freeing of slaves in addition to preserving the Union.

Douglas of lllinois. The Compromise of 1850 was an attempt to smooth out the confrontation between the slave status of territories acquired during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). The Compromise of 1850 allowed California to be admitted as a free state and the dismission of New Mexico Territory and Utah Territory with slavery was left to to the decision of the people in relation to Popular Sovereignty on slavery.
